Summary

Serves as a clinical pharmacist providing direct pharmaceutical care for patients within the Indian Health Service. This position is considered as the major source of pharmaceutical clinical information and is expected to manage selected patients with chronic disease states, as well as providing pharmaceutical care for acute patients.

Duties
  • Responsible for proper interpretation and dispensing of prescribed products including the review of labeling for directions for use and precautions as necessary to assure proper protection of prescribed products to the patient.
  • Provide specialized services to assist patients with managing conditions such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure and other chronic illness.
  • Provide information and advice about drug therapy and usage, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage.
  • Maintain records such as pharmacy files, patient records, inventories, and control records for narcotics or controlled drugs.
  • Compound and dispense medications as prescribed by physicians, dentists, and other licensed practitioners by calculating, weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients.
  • May serve as a pharmacy consultant and advisor to such groups as the therapeutic agents committee, the hospital research committee, and the infection control committee.

Medical and clinical requirements
Immunization policies may apply; vaccine exemption requests may be available according to applicable guidance. The selected individual must obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained, adverse actions may occur, up to removal from Federal service.

Other requirements
On-call hours or standby duty may be required. Successful passing of the E-Verify employment verification check. Direct deposit setup is required.

Background and education
Background investigation and fingerprint check are required. The investigation must determine suitability for Federal employment. A credit check may be conducted as part of the process. This position has an education requirement; transcripts or course lists are encouraged with unofficial transcripts accepted initially.

Qualifications
To qualify, resume must demonstrate experience and/or education to perform the duties. Experience includes paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service. Identify duties and responsibilities and hours per week for each position. Basic professional requirements include:

  • Degree:
    Doctoral degree in Pharmacy (ACPE-recognized) at time of degree.
  • Licensure:
    Must have passed NAPLEX and MPJE and be licensed to practice in a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
  • Medical/color vision requirement:
    Must be able to distinguish basic colors.

Experience
Demonstrate knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies to perform the work, including pharmacology, patient care, and medication management. Qualifying experience may include:

  • Dispensing medications and providing usage information to patients and health practitioners.
  • Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care.
  • Administrative or advisory work for a pharmacy program.
  • Planning, monitoring, and evaluating medication programs or regimens.
  • Establishing medication-handling procedures for storage and preservation.
  • Researching medical literature to provide accurate responses and maintaining medication records.

Education and grade level
