Craftsman 1st Class Pipeline Welder – North Western Energy
We are seeking a skilled pipeline welder to join our team in Deer Lodge, Montana. The role involves performing high‑pressure pipeline welding in both shop and field environments, ensuring compliance with API 1104, and maintaining the highest safety standards.
Responsibilities- Weld repair sleeves, pressure control fittings, or hot tap fittings onto high‑pressure transmission pipelines while in service.
- Perform all labor‑type duties such as shoveling, coating (tape, wax, epoxy) pipe, loading/unloading material, filling and positioning sandbags under pipe, pouring concrete, installing and tightening flange bolts, and other tasks required to complete construction and maintenance activities on the gas transmission system.
- Work in stressful situations, managing multiple projects with conflicting goals under strict deadlines.
- Communicate regularly with other departments, groups, and staff to achieve organizational goals.
- Adhere to company safety standards and the Code of Business Conduct & Ethics.
- Demonstrate leadership consistent with North Western Energy’s code, values, policies, processes and controls.
- Ensure all actions are consistent with North Western Energy’s values, mission, and strategic business objectives.
- Demonstrated safety record.
- Strong teamwork skills with engineering, supervisors and other stakeholders.
- Ability to work outdoors year‑round in all weather, including smoke, grinding dust, loud noise, open flames, welding arcs, and hot/cold temperatures.
- Valid Montana driver’s license; must obtain or already possess a Montana State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Physically fit and able to perform pipe welds in various positions.
- Qualified to complete butt welds and full‑size branch‑connection welds on 12 ¾” pipe per API 1104; requalification every six months.
- Complete an in‑service qualification test per API 1104 Appendix B using E7018 electrodes.
- Skill set to produce welds that meet API 1104 standards and pass non‑destructive testing (radiography).
- Detail oriented, tracking material installation and documentation.
- High safety awareness in shop and field, and effective communication with associates.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lb regularly, 50 lb occasionally.
- Live within 45 minutes of Deer Lodge, MT work location.
- Willingness to work overtime up to 500 hours per year.
- Available for 24/7 call‑outs for pipeline emergencies.
- Prepared for extensive travel—up to 100 % of the time within North Western Energy operating areas.
- Pass employment physical, drug test and background check.
- Minimum five years of experience in natural‑gas or oil pipeline construction/fabrication (desired).
$5.34 – $50.81 per hour, depending on experience.
