POSITION DESCRIPTIONPOSITION TITLE: Head Coach
FACILITY: Hardin High School
REPORTS TO: Athletic / Activities Director
POSITION OVERVIEW:The person in this position provides leadership, supervision, and organization of a specific athletic activity and will carry out the objectives of that program. They help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, and appreciation for the values of discipline, and an increased level of self-esteem. The Head Coach will establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:- Begins practice sessions on the opening date allowed by the MHSA
- All teams will compete in the maximum number of contests allowed by the MHSA if it is reasonably possible to schedule this number
- Holds first aid card and runs as safely as possible the program with proper training procedures
- Teaches and displays good sportsmanship
- Any season that extends beyond the normal season/school year due to tournament participation shall be considered part of the coaching contract
- Process end of year reports, and any other necessary reports, lists or forms and submits such reports to the Athletic Director, school and MHSA
- Develops a daily and weekly practice schedule which will be approved by the Athletic Director prior to distribution to team members
- Maintains competency in rules, rule interpretations, meet procedures, coaching techniques, and general information about all aspects of the sport. Encourages assistant coaches to do the same
- Attends clinics, workshops, and meetings to keep abreast of new ideas, techniques, and rule changes
- Implements proper procedures for out of season practices according to MHSA guidelines
- Is active in professional organizations such as state coach’s association
- Inventories, selects, cares for and maintains equipment
- Formulates objectives for the upcoming sports season
- Assists Athletic Director with proper registration of all athletes
- Reviews District policy on accident reporting and insurance procedures
- Assists Athletic Director in compiling eligibility lists and other reports
- Arranges for a systematic issuance of school equipment
- Makes sure all athletes have had physicals and signed waiver granting permission to transport to nearest hospital in the event of injury before they may practice
- Explains all regulations of the district presented in the Athletic Code
- Clarifies to athletes the letter award policy
- Selects and instructs team managers on proper care of equipment, facilities, and other assigned duties
- Makes arrangements for all bus trips with Athletic Director
- Prepares a written document of the method of squad cuts and awards system
- Establishes performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition
- Maintains on file a game book specifying usual season work-outs, off-season work-out, weight training program, suggested diet, schedule, and plays/strategy
- Attend District, State, and National leadership and fall leadership conference
- Assumes responsibility for constant care and supervision of equipment and facilities being used
- Supervises control over all phases of teams in the program
- Organizes and schedules practice sessions on a regular basis with the idea of developing the athlete’s greatest potential
- Applies discipline in a firm, positive and consistent manner as outlined according to athletic policy
- Emphasizes safety precautions and uses accepted training and injury procedures. Adheres to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention and follow up
