Position: 7th Grade Initiative Staff

Overview

Be among the first applicants for a role supporting the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the general direction of the Teen Director, the 7th Grade Initiative employee is responsible for leading program activities, ensuring participant safety and wellbeing, and fostering an environment that supports socialization with peers.

Essential Functions
  • Uphold the YMCA of Montclair commitment to caring for individuals and families, focusing on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, with honesty, integrity, and a sincere commitment to team members and members.
  • Interact with teens using initiative to foster a welcoming and safe environment.
  • Adhere to check in and check out procedures daily with participants.
  • Ensure smooth transitions between activities with participants.
  • Collaborate with the Teen Department Lead to create and implement program activities with participants.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with and ability to implement emergency procedures.
  • Champion gender and cultural diversity while implementing and monitoring programs.
  • Engage teens in a friendly, age-appropriate manner and communicate with parents as necessary after discussions with the Teen Director.
  • Maintain a safe work environment free of clutter, debris and hazards.
  • Report all accidents and incidents involving self, participants, guests or other employees.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
  • Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.
  • Ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked and routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker rooms and restrooms).

Qualifications
  • HS/GED required.
  • Must be 23 years of age.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working with teens and planning activities.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification or ability to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Excellent human relations, strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow directions and adhere to policies and procedures.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

Lifting and moving program equipment up to 50 lbs.

Hourly Pay Rate

Up to $16.13

Work Schedule

Monday to Friday, 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM, with occasional Saturdays as needed.
