POSITION DESCRIPTION

Montclair State University, Department of Biology, offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computational Biology beginning in August of 2027. We seek a colleague whose interests include teaching introductory and advanced Computational Biology, establishing a vigorous, extramurally funded research program that involves both graduate and undergraduate students, and which will support new programs that are being developed, such as an online M.S. in Computational Biology.

We are particularly interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Faculty members are expected to contribute to the University's mission through excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and service.

Teaching:
The standard annual load for tenure-track faculty is 12 teaching credit hours (TCH) a semester, with reassigned time (course release) available for faculty with additional responsibilities such as mentoring doctoral faculty or administering programs. Faculty are expected to center student success and measurable learning outcomes through clear course design, inclusive pedagogies, and the integration of emerging disciplinary and pedagogical developments.

Responsibilities include classroom instruction, student mentoring and advising, and developing and updating courses and curricula aligned with student demands and institutional strategic priorities.

Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity:
Faculty are expected to be productive scholars or artists whose work embodies formal inquiry or creative expression that expands, enhances, or applies knowledge. Research results must be shared in significant national and/or international scholarly or artistic venues following rigorous review. The University supports these endeavors through the Faculty Scholarship Program (FSP), which typically provides research-active faculty with up to 6 TCH of reassigned time per academic year to pursue their scholarly agenda.

Service:
Faculty members are expected to perform valuable service to the department, college/school, university, and professional communities. This includes participating in shared governance, academic program vitality, and sharing professional expertise within and beyond the University. Service activities are separate and distinct from the specific assignments for which faculty members receive course release.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The Department of Biology has a collaborative culture in which tenured and tenure-track faculty members work together to support student learning. It integrates everything from molecular biology to ecosystems biology within the department and incorporates the multiple institutes, centers, departments, and schools within the College of Science and Mathematics. From the use of the next generation sequencing and organismal genetic modification to the development of field sites around the world, the Department goals are to expand our understanding of living systems and to foster a critical‑thinking mentality at all levels.

The student population reflects the diversity of the university as a whole, with 55% students in the department coming from groups generally underrepresented in the sciences.

SCHOOL DESCRIPTION

The College of Science and Mathematics at Montclair State University empowers the next generation of STEM leaders through rigorous academics, hands‑on discovery, and inclusive excellence. Our mission is grounded in a student‑centered philosophy that values the dedication of our faculty, the curiosity of our students, and a shared commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.
