Overview

Group Exercise Instructor - HP at YMCA of Montclair. The Group Exercise Instructor plays a significant role in providing a positive, enthusiastic atmosphere for members’ health and fitness goals. This is a visible position with daily contact with members. The incumbent must be flexible and able to establish positive relationships with both members and staff.

$25.00/hr - $39.00/hr

• Leads group through appropriate exercise class formats (Step, Bootcamp, etc.), consistent with YMCA health and fitness principles, including safe exercise selection, sound cues, and music speed. Suggests modifications to accommodate various fitness levels within the class.
• Directs members with any special medical limitations or concerns to the Health and Wellness Director.
• Maintains a positive, upbeat attitude with a clear voice and enthusiasm.
• Supervises member behavior and maintains patience and tact while ensuring individual actions do not infringe on others’ rights and privileges.
• Maintains neat and orderly fitness class equipment; instructs members to return equipment properly and operates stereo equipment with care.
• Is well groomed and presentable, wearing appropriate exercise attire.
• Is reliable, starting and ending class on time and making efficient use of class time.
• Is responsible for securing an appropriate substitute when unable to lead a scheduled class, posting a request on Group Ex Pro and communicating with the substitute and Health and Wellness Director.
• Maintains appropriate stereo volume level and adjusts on request.
• Monitors class participants for general condition, technique, and ability to follow; anticipates safety concerns and takes action to reduce risks; responds effectively to emergencies as needed.
• Participates in staff meetings and training; maintains current group exercise certifications and CPR/First Aid.
• Completes employee hand scan accurately before and after class.
• Provides high-quality customer service and can conduct YMCA tours for new or prospective members.
• Assists with emergency evacuation and other special tasks as needed.
• Measures effectiveness through membership satisfaction surveys and class attendance.
• Adheres to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
• Attends Abuse Risk Management training and follows procedures for managing high-risk activities and supervising members.
• Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations per mandated abuse reporting procedures.

• Must have completed, or obtain within the first six months of teaching, Principles of YMCA Health & Fitness certification and YMCA Group Exercise Instructor certification. Other nationally recognized fitness certifications are beneficial. Working knowledge of Montclair YMCA group exercise equipment and ability to lead a safe, fun fitness program in line with YMCA training principles.
• Positive, upbeat attitude with strong member service skills and ability to relate to a diverse population.
• CPR/AED and First Aid Certification, or obtain within 90 days of employment.

This role involves climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs), finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity. Work is primarily indoors.
