Position Overview

Student Assessment Assistant at Montebello Unified SC Dist.

Position Information

This is a Promotional / Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list for current and future vacancies. Incumbents are expected to work eight (8) hours per day, five (5) days per week, and twelve (12) months per year.

General Purpose

Under general supervision, administers various student diagnostic and placement examinations, including academic and language proficiency, aptitude, and vocational interest exams, as well as other assessment instruments and tools; scores and maintains related records; and, as assigned, performs related duties.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Student Assessment Assistant classification is responsible for administering examinations to students entering the District in various diagnostic areas, including aptitude, academic and language proficiency, and vocational interest. Incumbents administer and score various diagnostic and placement exams according to District guidelines and established procedures, determine appropriate class level and placement, and maintain records of exam scores and student data and information.

Incumbents are also responsible for examining students for transition and designation, according to established guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administers diagnostic and placement examinations to students in various areas, such as aptitude, academic and language proficiency, and vocational interest for the purpose of classroom and grade placement, according to established examination procedures; prepares files for new students and fills out necessary exam forms; schedules examinations for students; files and organizes student folders; inputs new enrollments and their exam scores and language classifications in the District's CAST system;

    reviews paperwork filled out by other interviewers to ensure it is properly filled out and signed; and, travels to various school sites to administer exams and assists psychologists, speech-language therapists, and other specialists with exam administration, as assigned.
  • Administers initial, transition, and re-designation diagnostic and placement exams to determine student academic and language ability, proficiency, and aptitude according to established guidelines; translates and explains examination procedures to students; scores exams and explains and interprets results for students; may administer exams for incoming students at other school sites; and, reviews home language surveys and student cumulative records to identify potential LEP students.
  • Scores exams and recommends appropriate class placement according to predetermined placement levels; informs parents, students, and teachers of a student's academic and language ability, aptitude, classification, and classroom placement; prepares and distributes letters regarding academic placement; and, communicates assessment progress and scores over time with families via yearly mailings.
  • Maintains logs and records of various examination and program related data, including new enrollments, current test scores, numbers of students currently enrolled in the program, hours of student attendance, and students needing extensions; updates student information and scores; fills out status change forms for participants who have completed or left the program; and, assists in compiling and gathering information and data for various reports.
  • Performs administrative and clerical support duties for case workers, Bilingual Facilitators, and teachers, if requested; sends and receives faxes; laminates materials; and, answers questions regarding testing examinations and placements for case workers, parents, students, and teachers.

  • Attends meetings regarding assessment techniques and instruments.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Knowledge Of
  • Basic examination administration guidelines, practices, and procedures.
  • Correct English usage, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Administrative practices and procedures, including record keeping and filing practices and procedures.
  • Operation of standard business software.
Ability To
  • Administer assessment and diagnostic exams to individual students according to established guidelines.
  • Organize, set priorities, and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility.
  • Organize and maintain confidential student files and records.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Use tact, discretion, courtesy and patience in dealing with sensitive and difficult students and situations and individuals.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with District staff, specialists, teachers, parents, case workers, students and others encountered in the course of work.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalent, or higher education; and
  • One (1) year of clerical, office administrative, or secretarial experience.
