DEFINITIONUnder limited supervision from a Police Captain or the Police Chief, directs the activities of an assigned watch or unit of the Police Department; functions as Watch Commander; assigns, directs, and manages the work of personnel in patrol, investigations, support services, administration or specialized police staff activities.
TESTING PROCESSPolice Lieutenant applicants who meet the qualifications will be invited to take Oral Board Interviews.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEAny combination equivalent to education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. An example of this is as follows:
- At time of appointment, five years' experience as a law enforcement officer, with at least one year of responsible supervisory & management experience, preferably as a Sergeant, and
- Experience as a Bureau or Watch Commander, and
- College credits equivalent to an Associate's degree.
The following are required at the time of appointment and as continued condition of employment:
- Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License and a satisfactory driving record,
- Possession of POST Intermediate Certificate,
- Possession of or eligibility to apply for a POST Supervisory Certificate within 18 months of appointment.
