Overview
The City of Monterey Park is hiring Crew Leader. There are 2 vacancies: 1 in Streets and 1 in Parks. This recruitment will be open on a continuous basis with applications reviewed bi-weekly. The recruitment may close at any time with or without notice.
ResponsibilitiesA Crew Leader is a supervisory position that receives general supervision from a Public Works Supervisor and is responsible for performing complex tasks. The Crew Leader may temporarily substitute as a supervisor. The Crew Leader supervises and inspects the work of maintenance crews, sets up and operates equipment used in maintenance and construction work. In addition to these daily tasks, Crew Leaders are required to be in the office 1–2 hours per day, and assist as standby on a rotational shift.
Office work includes processing and completing work order requests and writing staff performance evaluations. Crew Leaders may also be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
The Maintenance Services (Streets) Division is responsible for routine maintenance activities from patching potholes and repairing damaged sidewalks to overseeing the city’s street sweeping contract, and preparing roads for the annual slurry seal program. When assigned to Streets, a Crew Leader leads a crew of 4 (1 Senior Maintenance Worker and 3 Maintenance Workers). Duties include finishing cement and asphalt work, conducting tailgate safety meetings, operating trucks and trailers to move equipment and materials, and performing heavy manual labor.
ThePark Maintenance Division
The Park Maintenance Division provides maintenance for 14 city parks. When assigned to Parks, a Crew Leader leads a crew of 3 full-time Maintenance Workers and 1 part-time Maintenance Worker. A Crew Leader will be responsible for maintaining an average of 2 parks per day. Day-to-day responsibilities vary to meet park needs. Typical responsibilities include: overseeing crew members; training new staff;
monitoring and repairing irrigation systems; repairing and installing drinking fountains, BBQ grills, toilet paper and hand soap dispensers and playground equipment; general plumbing; unclogging sinks and toilets; mowing and maintaining park landscape; painting or removing graffiti from walls and signs; replacing wood on park benches and picnic tables; upkeep of baseball infields; and monitoring and maintaining gas powered equipment.
PHYSICAL EFFORT
Requires some physical effort including bending, stooping, climbing and lifting items weighing 20–100 lbs. Tasks are occasionally performed in inclement weather.
Education and Experience
- Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying.
- High school graduation or GED supplemented by 3 years' experience in construction maintenance work or related experience.
LICENSE
Possession of a valid California Class C motor vehicle operator's license required at time of appointment. Ability to obtain a valid Class B California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License within 12 months of appointment is required and is a condition of continued employment (unless medically unable to qualify).
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Knowledge of - supervisory methods; gasoline and diesel powered street and parks construction and maintenance equipment including its operations, adjustments, care and repair, methods, practices; materials used in public works maintenance and construction; proper safety techniques and rules.
Ability to train subordinates in equipment operation and in the various aspects and methods of street repair and maintenance; operate motorized units efficiently and safely; read and interpret plans and specifications; keep accurate records; communicate effectively orally and in writing.
