PurposeUnder the general supervision of the Associate Vice President for Public Safety/Chief of Police, the Community Services Program Specialist provides support in parking, public safety, and administrative operations within the University Police Department (UPD). Responsibilities include organizing traffic control and assisting law enforcement personnel as directed. The role requires independent judgment to analyze and resolve complex issues and may involve policy interpretation, development, and implementation.
This position leads UPD student employees, service learning students, interns, and volunteers.
- CSO Coordination:
Provide lead direction and daily oversight of the Community Service Officer (CSO) Program, including scheduling, performance feedback, training, recruiting, and promoting the program. Responsible for CSO program budget/billing oversight. - Community Programs:
Organize and staff community engagement activities, attend planning meetings, coordinate UPD support for events, and assist with directing traffic and public safety communications during events. - Fleet Management:
Coordinate maintenance and repair of Parking and UPD vehicles, including Emergency Response Vehicles; maintain related records and act as liaison with internal/external entities. - Administrative Functions:
Manage scheduling, animal control, event planning, contracts, budgeting support, vendor communications, staffing schedules, training, conflict resolution, and safety protocols. - Training and Workload Organization:
Develop and update policies and procedures to improve efficiency, consistency, and reliability in departmental operations. - Preparedness Duties:
Oversee monthly emergency testing (Blue-Light Phone/Call Boxes) and provide support to the Emergency Operations Center as needed; serve as an alternate for emergency mass notification. - Parking Service Office Support:
Provide front‑line customer service in UPD and Parking Services, including Live Scan processing and cash register operations.
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of complex programs and administrative specialties, including relevant laws and regulations. Advanced knowledge of public and business administration, operations and fiscal management. Experience with administrative survey techniques, operations/system analysis, statistics and research methods, and ability to interpret results to inform policy decisions.
SkillsStrong research, policy development, data evaluation, and program evaluation capabilities. Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and to develop sound recommendations.
AbilitiesTake initiative, work independently, manage multiple priorities, apply extensive subject matter expertise to complex programs, understand problems from a broad perspective, interact with diverse entities, present ideas clearly in writing or presentations, and maintain effective university-community partnerships in person and online.
