The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at California State University, Monterey Bay invites applications for a tenure‑track faculty position at the assistant professor level to begin in Fall 2026. We seek applicants with a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research.

The Successful Candidate Will

  • Teach undergraduate courses in applied mathematics, computational mathematics, and/or data science.
  • Develop or expand curriculum offerings in data science and/or applied mathematics.
  • Maintain an active research program, ideally involving undergraduate student engagement.
  • Contribute to mentoring, advising, and supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and with local industry or community partners as appropriate.

The College of Science

The College of Science offers B.S. degrees in Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science, Mechatronics Engineering, Agricultural Plant and Soil Sciences, Biology, Communication Design, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Technology and Policy, Marine Science, a B.A. in Environmental Studies, and graduate programs in Environmental Science, Instructional Science and Technology, and Marine Science.

The Department

The Mathematics and Statistics Department offers a strong focus on mathematics, statistics, and data science curriculum. It includes a Mathematics B.S. with concentrations in Mathematics for Teaching and Pure and Applied Mathematics, and a Statistics and Data Science B.S. with minors in Mathematics, Data Science, and Statistics. Departments values innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and undergraduate research.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver high quality, inclusive instruction.
  • Develop or revise curriculum and courses in applied mathematics or data science.
  • Supervise student research and projects.
  • Engage in scholarly research, publish in peer‑reviewed venues.
  • Contribute to service at department, university, and professional levels.
  • Build collaborations with external stakeholders and/or community partners.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Statistics, or a closely related field by the date of appointment.
  • Ability to teach effectively at all undergraduate levels.
  • Commitment to working with a diverse student body, including first‑generation, low‑socioeconomic status, and minoritized students.
  • Experience or training in relevant computational tools such as Python, R, MATLAB, SQL, etc.
  • Demonstrated potential for research in applied mathematics and/or data science.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching applied mathematics or data science courses to diverse populations.
  • Research interests in machine learning, scientific computing, mathematical modeling, high‑performance computing, optimization, data ethics, causal inference, or AI.
  • Experience mentoring students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with evidence‑based data science or applied mathematics pedagogy and curriculum guidelines (e.g., ASA, SIAM).
