The Higher Education Research Participant Program at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is designed to attract talented undergraduate and graduate students, and recent graduates to join ongoing research programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics topic areas.

As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will have the opportunity to explore a federal career and gain a competitive edge as you apply your education, talent, and skills in a variety of settings.

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to:

• Collaborating with team members on research projects
• Data collection
• Reduction and analysis, and communicating results through presentations and written materials

The STEM Research Participation Program at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

This appointment is a 12-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

• Stipend to be determined by NPS. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.

The mission of the Naval Postgraduate School provides relevant and advanced educational and research experience to commissioned officers of the Naval Service to increase their combat effectiveness and enhance the security of the United States. In support of this mission as well as to sustain academic excellence, NPS and the U.S. Department of the Navy foster and encourage an academic program of relevant and meritorious naval research.

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

The STEM Research Participation Program at the Naval Postgraduate School is open to all students and recent graduates who meet the following qualifications:

• Open to qualified U.S. citizens, to foreign citizens who are eligible to participate as J-1 Exchange Visitors, and to foreign citizens eligible for other visa categories approved by the Sponsor and ORISE.
