Title: School Social Worker
Job Goal: To provide assistance with mental health services and to ensure the successful transition of students between schools. To assist all students and families to increase the quality of education and community living.
Reports to: Mental Health Services Coordinator
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in social work
- Demonstrates effective skills in problem solving, communications, organization, planning, record keeping and human relations
- Possesses knowledge of laws and regulations governing special education in Alabama
- Successfully completes required criminal history check and has proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
- Works with students, families, teachers, and administrators to identify and address the social/emotional, mental health, and wellness needs of students through collaboration with school-based and community mental health professionals, including school counselors, school social workers, school nurses, school psychologists, and school resource officers through the following activities:
- Works with parents/guardians, teachers, school principal/principal's designee, and community-based resources, the school social worker implements strategies that promote students' positive school adjustment
- Serves as a member of the basic Problem-Solving Team, complying with State and federal statutes;
Participates in the evaluation, identification, classification and placement of all pupils requiring Special Education - Performs a social assessment of students referred to the Problem-Solving Team for evaluation, including observation of the student, and evaluation of family, school and community factors, which contribute to the student's social and academic adjustment within the educational setting
- Reports social work findings at regularly scheduled Problem-Solving meeting
- Demonstrates ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, administrators and others
- Develops youth leadership and empowerment skills
- Facilitates restorative justices circles, conflict resolution, and small group mental health counseling (i.e. anger/stress management, self-esteem, grief, relationships, etc.)
- Serves as liaison to/for community resources, including providing next steps for short and or long term therapy, intervention, and advocacy.
- Works with truancy officers. In collaboration with Helping Families Initiative
- Other duties as assigned.
