Alabama State University, Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management invites applications to fill the position of Academic Advisor II. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Academic Advisement, the selected candidate will serve as the primary liaison to the Office of Admissions, University College and the Major Colleges to support the academic success of all prospective and newly admitted transfer students.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Serves as the designated advocate for ALL new transfer students, especially first year transfer students. Advise incoming transfer students per the selected Major. Collaborate closely with campus academic departments and primary staff in each Major Colleges to ensure a smooth and seamless transition for new transfer students.
- Manage a general advising caseload of students whose majors vary. Teach students how to understand Major curriculum guides, navigate the registration process, My Hornets Access and CANVAS. Maintain accurate and well organized advising and transfer records.
- Learn all undergraduate degree program requirements at ASU to help support the success of incoming transfer students. Understand and articulate General Education requirements and Major core requirements/curriculum to all students in assigned caseload. Inform students of University academic standards and academic policies and procedures.
- Screen all new transfer students for Direct Admit eligibility and serve as the assigned Academic Advisor for those that are not eligible. Serve as the liaison to all Major Colleges for specific academic advising (General Education courses) and provide additional support services as needed.
- Establish professional, meaningful and trusting relationships with students. Create a warm, friendly, helpful and supportive environment for transfer students and other students in assigned caseload.
- Closely monitor the academic progress of assigned transfer students for academic success and successful EXIT from University College to a Major College. Advocate for and place emphasis on student retention and success.
- Monitor academic progress to prevent probation and counsel students accordingly. Develop intervention plans and strategies for students experiencing academic difficulties/challenges. Work with students to enhance their academic skills to overcome difficulties, both academic and personal by identifying and addressing factors contributing to below average academic performance. Make necessary and required referrals to campus resources and departments to promote academic success and to increase retention.
- Understand and articulate the Admissions transfer criteria and process (to include preliminary transcript review/evaluation) and other requirements for transfer students. Actively participate in Admissions related events including Connection Day and other campus visits. Establish professional and meaningful relationships with staff from other institutions. Collaborate with Admissions by traveling to campuses within the state to meet with prospective and incoming transfer students.
- Meet with all potential transfer students individually or in groups who are planning to attend ASU as part of an MOU from other institutions (to include MOU staff and/or representatives). Support and participate in all related academic programs and activities specifically designed for transfer students that promotes retention and persistence to graduation.
- Connect students to relevant learning and career success resources, professional organizations, student organizations, internships. Collaborate with Career Services regarding career options. Participate in campus student outreach activities, specifically organized by Admissions and Career Services.
- Collect both quantitative and qualitative data for preparation of annual reports. Provide weekly reports to Director.
- Attend professional workshops and conferences relating to transfer students and academic advising. Serve as the on call Advisor to students when assigned Advisor or Director is not available.
