Job Description & How to Apply Below

The fundamental reason the classification exists is to provide the safe custody, detention, treatment, and rehabilitation of adult inmates in the Municipal Jail. Trainees must complete the two-week Jail Management course within the six-month probationary period. During that time, employees are assigned to work with a training officer. Upon successful completion of the probationary period, which includes completion of the Jail Management course, the Trainee will attain permanent status and be appointed to the Municipal Jail Corrections Officer (MJCO) classification.

Major work functions of the class are: patrolling cell blocks, securing and delivering items to inmates; observing and directing inmates in work assignments; processing inmates; and enforcing department rules and regulations. Work is performed in accordance with established department and state standards and guidelines under the general supervision of a Municipal Jail Corrections Sergeant.

Must be 19 years of age. Graduation from an approved high school, or a G.E.D. certificate is required. An applicant must have graduated and received a regular or advanced high school diploma as approved or recognized by the Alabama State Department of Education (see Alabama Administrative Code Rule 290-3-1-02). Correspondence or mail order high school diplomas or certificates are not acceptable.

Must be of good moral character and have no record of conviction for a misdemeanor or felony involving violence, force, or moral turpitude, or serious traffic violations. Applicants will be fingerprinted prior to consideration for appointment. Must have and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license as needed to drive city vehicles when transporting inmates.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must submit to a medical examination following an offer of employment. Employment with the City of Montgomery is conditional upon the potential employee passing a pre-employment drug test.
