Role DescriptionThis is a full-time, on-site position for an Assistant Federal Defender in the Trial Unit, based in Montgomery, AL. The primary responsibilities include representing clients in federal criminal cases at all stages, from arraignment to trial and sentencing. The role also involves case investigation, conducting legal research, drafting motions, and working collaboratively within the Trial Unit. The Assistant Federal Defender will advocate zealously on behalf of clients, engaging in strategy development, negotiation, and courtroom representation.
Qualifications- Strong legal research, analytical reasoning, and case preparation skills
- Proficiency in trial advocacy, including oral argument, examination of witnesses, and trial strategy development
- Demonstrated writing and editing skills for drafting motions, briefs, and other legal documents
- Experience in, or knowledge of, federal criminal law and procedure is highly desirable
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities to effectively work with clients, colleagues, and legal professionals
- Commitment to providing equitable representation to indigent clients in the federal criminal justice system
- Active membership in good standing with a state Bar
