Salary Information
Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.
A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations.
Nature of WorkThe fundamental reason the classification exists is to provide the safe custody, detention, treatment and rehabilitation of adult inmates in the Municipal Jail. Major work functions of the class are:
- Patrolling cell blocks, securing and delivering items to inmates.
- Observing and directing inmates in work assignments.
- Processing inmates.
- Enforcing department rules and regulations.
Work is performed in accordance with established department and state standards and guidelines under the general supervision of a Municipal Jail Corrections Sergeant.
Minimum QualificationsMust be 21 years of age. Graduation from an approved high school, or a G.E.D. certificate is required. An applicant must have graduated and received a regular or advanced high school diploma as approved or recognized by the Alabama State Department of Education (see Alabama Administrative Code Rule 290‑3‑1‑02). Correspondence or mail order high school diplomas or certificates are not acceptable.

Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Must be of good moral character and have no record of conviction or a misdemeanor or felony involving violence, force, or moral turpitude, or serious traffic violations. Applicants will be fingerprinted prior to consideration for appointment. Must have and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license as needed to drive city vehicles when transporting inmates.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must submit to a medical examination following an offer of employment. Employment with the City of Montgomery is conditional upon the potential employee passing a pre-employment drug test.

Applicants who appear for processing as scheduled by the Montgomery City‑County Personnel Department will be placed on the eligible list. The Montgomery Police Department will administer drug and psychological screening procedures, and collect background information. Applicants who do not meet the Montgomery Police Department's requirements for employment may be removed from the eligible list at the request of the Montgomery Police Department.
