Welder III

Job Purpose

This position is responsible for operating various hand‑welding and flame‑cutting equipment to weld, fabricate, or join work pieces together. The role involves safe use of hand and power tools common to the welding trade along with welding methods such as MIG or Stick.

• Pass internal welding certification under ISO, AAR, and other regulatory agencies.
• Retrieve materials, assemble, and weld into finished products.
• Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g., cut material with powered saws to match measurements).
• Operate angle grinders to prepare parts for welding.
• Interpret welding blueprints, assembly instructions, drawings, JSA’s, and bills of material.
• Maintain welding proficiency as required by Progress Rail QSP 4.9 and applicable local and international standards.
• Accurately use measuring devices such as tape measures, scales, and calipers; measure and record inspection information.
• Use hand tools, pneumatic and electric powered grinders, impact wrenches, and overhead cranes to transport components.

• Master various welds such as pipe weld, GMAW, SMAW, etc. in all positions.
• Hold certification to a recognized welding standard such as AWS D1.1.
• Perform single and multi‑pass welds in all positions.
• Perform preventative and basic maintenance of weld machines and equipment; change out wire and gas bottles as needed.
• Weld using manual or semi‑automatic welding equipment in vertical, horizontal, or overhead positions.
• Train others; forklift certified; may be trained on other welding machinery such as a Robot Welder.

• Skill Level I – Less than 1 year experience or no previous welding experience.
• Skill Level II – 1–2 years of welding experience.
• Skill Level III – 2–3 years of welding experience; certification in GMAW and FCAW preferred. Technical certifications may substitute for experience.
• Skill Level IV – 4–5 years of welding experience as a certified welder; additional SMAW certifications preferred.
• Skill Level V – 5+ years of welding experience as a certified welder with all previous certifications.

• Certified Welder.
• Knowledge of various welding types (MIG, MMA, Stick, TIG).
• Mechanical aptitude.

• Lift up to 50 lbs.; perform physical activities requiring arms, legs, and whole body strength; work in confined spaces.
• Perform tasks in stationary or moving positions, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, and working at heights (>6 ft). Use PPE and fall protection.
• Exposure to UV, reflected radiation, high noise, vibration, and extreme temperatures.

The position is safety sensitive, operating around live tracks and heavy equipment. Strict adherence to safety policies and PPE is required. Work may be inside or outside, with exposure to temperature extremes or all weather elements.
