Programmer Analyst III – AS400/RPG Developer

The client is seeking an experienced Programmer Analyst III / AS400 RPG Developer to support and enhance its Vital Statistics System
. This position requires a senior developer with extensive IBM AS400 and RPG programming experience who can independently maintain and enhance business‑critical legacy applications, troubleshoot production issues, perform testing, and work with both technical and business stakeholders.

• Maintain and enhance the ADPH Vital Statistics System.
• Develop, modify, and maintain RPG applications.
• Analyze existing systems and assist with application design and enhancements.
• Troubleshoot and resolve production application issues.
• Debug applications and perform issue resolution.
• Perform application testing, validation, and quality assurance.
• Create and maintain technical documentation and procedures.
• Collaborate with technical teams and business stakeholders.
• Support enterprise metrics initiatives.
• Provide ongoing support for business‑critical legacy applications.

• 8+ years of verifiable RPG programming experience.
• RPG experience must include work performed within the last 12–15 years.
• Strong hands‑on experience with the IBM AS400 platform.
• Experience supporting business‑critical applications.
• Strong systems analysis and design experience.
• Application development and maintenance experience.
• Production support, troubleshooting, and debugging experience.
• Testing and quality assurance experience.
• Strong technical documentation skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to work independently.
• Must be eligible for Alabama State Merit System employment.

The biggest screening item here is recent, verifiable RPG experience. The candidate should have 8+ years of AS400/RPG development experience, and that experience needs to fall within the last 12–15 years. This should not be treated as a general mainframe developer role. The target candidate needs direct IBM AS400/RPG development experience. The strongest candidates will have RPG/400, RPGLE/ILE RPG, SQL RPGLE, production support, and legacy enterprise application maintenance, with AS400 administration or upgrade experience being a plus.
