Overview
The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is the lead agency for Vermont’s Size and Weight Plan and the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. The DMV seeks a Motor Vehicle Inspector to enforce state size and weight statutes and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. The role requires collaboration with state and federal agencies, law‑enforcement partners, industry groups, and DMV internal units, including the Permit Unit and Commercial Vehicle Operations.
ResponsibilitiesMotor Vehicle Inspectors work primarily outdoors in all weather conditions. Assignments include motor‑vehicle patrols, fixed‑site truck inspections, and highway‑safety and infrastructure protection efforts. Inspectors coordinate with partners, schedule two‑week shifts in advance, and may be required to travel for training and mission‑related duties. A take‑home enforcement vehicle and a storage allowance are provided under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years of law‑enforcement experience.
- Full‑time certified Vermont law‑enforcement officer at hire or eligible for waiver from the Vermont Criminal Justice Council.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to lift and handle portable scales weighing 35 lbs. or more, and semi‑portable scales up to 1,300 lbs.
- Experience in automotive diagnostics and repair (preferred).
- Willingness to relocate or reside in the DMV Southern Sector enforcement area (Rutland, Windsor, Bennington, or Windham counties).
- Successful completion of a criminal record check, motor‑vehicle record check, full background investigation, and polygraph examination.
