Position Summary:

Under the supervision of a library head and with support from the liaison librarian team, the Student Librarian will provide both personal service at the Reference Desk and/or virtual reference service (chat, email, text messages) to McGill students, faculty, and other users of McGill Libraries. They will also participate in special projects and design learning objects in collaboration with librarians. This is an on-site position.

Primary duties include: informing and assisting researchers at the Reference Desk in discovering, accessing and using the Libraries' substantial information resources; communicating with and assisting remote clients through our Virtual Chat service (Lib Answers) and email in discovering, accessing and using information resources in all subject areas; assisting librarians with teaching workshops; assisting librarians with special projects (e.g. collection development, Lib Guides, exhibits);

participating in outreach and orientation activities; and conveying and demonstrating the service orientation and function of the Libraries in the performance of these duties.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
  • Students currently enrolled in the MISt program in the School of Information Studies, or students enrolled in a graduate program at McGill University who already have an MISt degree.
  • Reference, public service, or library experience would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with the application of information technology in libraries and knowledge of McGill digital resources.
  • Reliability and flexibility in covering shifts.
  • Fluent in oral and written communication in English and French. McGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # (3) on a scale of 0-4. Other languages an asset.
  • Effective communication skills within tactful and sympathetic social discourse.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the value of diversity and commitment to inclusion in the workplace and of the practices that contribute to a welcoming workplace.
