Faculty of Science Geography and Earth Systems (AOS and EPS)

Are you passionate about science communication and connecting with future students? Under the direction of the Associate Director, Organizational and Cultural Transformation, the Student Recruitment Officer (SRO) plays a key role for the recruitment of prospective students for programs offered in the Departments of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS), Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS), and Geography, within the Faculty of Science.

The SRO will work in close collaboration with the Area manager and their administrative team. The SRO will participate in the development and implementation of recruitment plans and marketing initiatives to promote programs and increase student enrollment. This includes representing the departments at various events, hosting student visitors, building an online presence, developing relationships with internal units and external organizations and evaluating various recruitment efforts.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the planning, development, and implementation of recruitment plans to promote programs and maximize student enrollment in the Departments of AOS, EPS, and Geography.
  • Participate in in-person and virtual recruitment activities and events within the province of Quebec and Ontario (McGill Open House, orientation, site visits to anglophone and francophone CEGEPs and Secondary Schools, etc.) and represent the departments.
  • Build and deliver engaging presentations, in English and in French, to prospective students and their parents to raise awareness and advise on programs, prerequisites and admissions.
  • Provide clear guidance concerning on-campus services, student life, tuition, financial assistance, potential career paths, etc.
  • Host student groups from schools and CEGEPs visiting the departments and develop workshops and activities to enhance their visits and experience.
  • Collaborate and develop effective working relationships with the Faculty of Science and McGill units that provide student and recruitment-related services.
  • Maintain regular contact with schools and CEGEPs in order to promote programs and revisions, special events, offerings, etc.
  • Maintain databases to track contacts and activities (e.g. schools, contact details, names of counsellors, record of institutions visited relative to “yield” statistics, etc.).
  • Event Planning and Logistics Manage all logistical arrangements for recruitment activities and events and organize for presence/participation/demonstration of current students at events when possible.
  • Prepare practical information for visits (level of interest, type of booth for event type, information format, etc.).
  • Marketing and Communications Develop compelling marketing materials and promotional content for recruitment activities and events, branding and communications.
  • This includes flyers, newsletters, brochures, posters, etc.
  • Build a social media plan and oversee online presence on platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, Linked In etc.).
  • Manage department websites and customize content to targeted audiences to increase student engagement and enrollment.
  • Other Analyze admissions data to identify priority student groups and design targeted outreach initiatives that promote enrollment in specific departments.
  • Prepare reports of recruitment activities, including analysis of engagement metrics, event outcomes, and recommendations for future outreach.
  • Provide support with graduation-related activities, as required.
  • Undertake special projects based on departmental priorities.
  • Note:

    The incumbent may work evenings and weekends for open house and other events.
