Job Description & How to Apply Below
Reports to:
Senior Principal Opto-Mechanical Engineer
Must be actively enrolled in a bachelors or masters degree in mechanical engineering or related program at a Canadian university
About Inpho Inpho is a fast-growing startup developing cutting-edge optoelectronic solutions for next-generation communications and photonic systems. Our multidisciplinary team is pushing the boundaries of innovation in integrated photonics and semiconductor packaging.
Our new class of monolithically integrated electro-photonic chips is poised to disrupt the optical interconnect market. These chips enable existing optical interconnect systems to be built at significantly lower cost, unlock new architectures with dramatically better price-to-performance, and make possible a generation of higher-speed interconnects that have been out of reach until now.
About the Role We're looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our system design team as we develop optical subassemblies for the global market. This is a hands‑on role with real ownership: you'll contribute to the mechanical design and validation of products that ship to customers, while working alongside experienced opto‑mechanical, electrical, optical, and process engineers.
The ideal candidate is analytical, coachable, and a strong team player, with solid Solid Works fundamentals and strong Python skills.
Key Responsibilities Precision Design: Support the mechanical design of optical assemblies in Solid Works, applying GD&T and tolerance analysis to achieve sub‑micron alignment stability.
Automation & Scripting: Use Python to automate CAD workflows, drive design studies, and integrate Solid Works with internal data and analysis pipelines.
Prototyping & Validation: Build, test, and validate parts and assemblies hands‑on in our lab.
Semiconductor Packaging: Help design and optimize semiconductor and optoelectronic packaging, with attention to thermal management, material selection, and structural integrity.
Cross‑Functional
Collaboration:
Partner daily with Electrical, Optical, Process, and Operations teams to solve complex integration challenges.
Requirements
Education:
Currently in the 3rd or 4th year of a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, in the first year of a Master's, or a recent graduate.
CAD Mastery: Proficiency in CAD for 3D design and 2D drawings, with strong working knowledge of Solid Works.
Data Management: Working familiarity with document management and version control, ideally including Solid Works PDM.
Python: Strong Python skills, with hands‑on experience scripting against the Solid Works API.
AI as a Productivity Multiplier: Demonstrated ability to use AI tools (Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) effectively in coding, analysis, and problem-solving.
Industry Awareness: Basic understanding of semiconductor devices, with a desire to learn more.
Soft Skills Coachable, detail‑oriented, and analytical
Go‑getter attitude with strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment
Why Join Inpho?
Be part of a mission‑driven startup shaping the future of photonics
Work alongside industry veterans on hardware that will define the next generation of optical interconnects
Come work with a dynamic, high-talent team to build and commercialize the highest-performance photonics chips in the world!
