Senior Technical Expert & Certification Specialist, Avionics & Electrical Systems – Job # – Full‑time – First Shift – Mirabel, Quebec – Bell Textron Inc.
Position ResponsibilitiesThe Authorized Person or Trainee for Avionics & Electrical Systems (AE) plays a critical role in overseeing the design, development, and certification of advanced avionics and electrical solutions. The role includes addressing component and system obsolescence, supporting upgrades and expansions of existing aircraft capabilities, driving new product development, and contributing to Bell’s airworthiness initiatives and aircraft customization efforts.
Key responsibilities include:
- Determining scope of investigations, reviewing data and reports, conducting inspections and engineering assessments.
- Witnessing component, ground, or flight tests required to establish compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Evaluating adequacy and completeness of project plans and compliance data to ensure all certification standards are met.
- Transport Canada Authorized Person / Trainee – interest in or attainment of TCCA authorization; propose and make findings of compliance with standards AWM 527/529 or US 14 CFR Part 27/29 and approve type design changes.
- System and Software Integration – familiarity with system and software integration, safety assessments, validation and verification testing in integration labs, flight testing, and qualification processes.
- Aircraft Design and Certification Knowledge – solid understanding of avionics and electrical design requirements and the qualification/certification process.
- Certification Compliance Data Review and Approval – conduct reviews and approvals of certification compliance data, develop project certification plans, review performance test plans and procedures, and analyze qualification reports.
- Certification Deliverables – skilled in preparing electrical loads, thermal analysis, EMC, HIRF, and lightning compliance documentation for installed or modified systems.
- Technical Direction for Certification Requirements – provide technical direction to projects based on certification requirements and advisory materials.
- Aircraft Ground and Flight Testing – experience overseeing ground and flight tests for compliance data gathering.
- LRU/system testing and troubleshooting in integration labs.
- Generation of technical solutions for a wide range of tasks, including requirements definition, specifications, architecture, and interface management for avionics systems.
- Development of test requirements for laboratory and flight test instrumentation design.
- Hardware and software integration testing of multiple systems operating together.
- Coordination with avionics suppliers on the integration and testing of displays, flight instruments, navigation systems, sensors, vehicle health, and management systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (preferred in electrical or mechanical). Equivalent experience considered.
- Minimum 5–7 years of pertinent aerospace industry experience.
- Strong analytical and leadership skills.
- Ability to work independently and develop solutions for advanced complexity tasks with subject‑matter experts.
- Excellent communication and writing skills.
- Mentoring of junior engineers.
- Strong work ethic and self‑motivation.
- Capability to coordinate solutions involving multiple organizations or disciplines.
- PFD, MFD, EICAS, cockpit controls, digital map.
- AHRS, GPS, IFF, ADS‑B, TCAS, ILS, radar altimeter, air data.
- Automatic flight control management system.
- Communication systems: VHF/UHF, HF, SATCOM, datalink, IC‑S.
- CVR and FDR.
- Electrical power generation, distribution, and protection (DC/AC, 28 V, HV).
- Electrical power storage devices.
- Lighting (internal, external, commercial, NVIS).
- Knowledge and practice of RTCA/DO‑160 and/or MIL‑STD‑810, MIL‑STD‑883, MIL‑STD‑461 and/or MIL‑STD‑464.
- Awareness of design assurance levels per RTCA/DO‑178.
- Awareness of RTCA/DO‑311 and RTCA/DO‑227.
- Working knowledge of SAE ARP 4754A, ARP 4761, or equivalent MIL standards.
