Job Description

NBCUniversal is seeking an experienced Associate Art Director to help define and drive the visual direction for an ambitious interactive entertainment project. This posting targets senior art leaders from the video game industry, across multiple overlapping specialty areas:
Characters, World, Concepts, Lighting & VFX.

In this role, you will partner with Art Direction, discipline leads, and cross-functional teams to establish visual standards, guide quality, align pipelines, and support scalable content creation across a large production environment.

Responsibilities

Define and uphold visual direction within your specialty while aligning to the overall artistic vision.

Translate art and creative goals into clear guidelines, workflows, and production-ready direction.

Lead and mentor artists and leads across internal teams and external partners.

Review work to ensure quality, consistency, realism, and technical feasibility.

Drive cross-discipline collaboration (Design, Tech Art, Production, etc.)

Identify risks and ensure delivery of high-quality, scalable content

Areas of Expertise

Candidates should bring depth in at least one of the following areas:

Characters

Own and guide the visual direction of the character ecosystem. From hero characters to large-scale population systems. This includes ensuring consistency in quality, style, and realism across character creation, customization, and modular pipelines.

Character art direction, anatomy, and visual storytelling through characters

Hero characters, crowd systems, and scalable customization pipelines

Collaboration with Animation, Tech Art, Design and production to deliver content to game pillars.

Maintaining consistency across internal teams and external partners

Concepts

Lead visual development and establish the foundational visual language of the project, defining tone, mood, and storytelling direction that guides downstream production.

Creation of visual pillars, style guides, art bibles, and reference libraries

Strong fundamentals in composition, architecture, anatomy, and design ideation

Translating art and creative vision into clear, actionable concept frameworks

Close partnership with World, Character, Animation, and Design teams

Lighting & VFX

Define the visual style for lighting, atmosphere, and effects to support mood, readability, and immersive storytelling across environments and gameplay.

Lighting direction across dynamic environments, time of day, and weather conditions

Atmosphere, post-processing, and VFX systems for gameplay and cinematic moments

Balancing artistic vision with real-time performance and technical constraints

Collaboration with World, Design, and Tech Art to ensure cohesive execution

World

Shape the visual identity of environments, including cities, neighborhoods, interiors, and landmarks, ensuring realism, diversity, and cohesion at scale.

Environment art direction across architecture, materials, set dressing, and composition

Modular and scalable world-building systems

Integration of gameplay, narrative, and environmental storytelling

Collaboration across Concept, Lighting/VFX, Tech Art, Design, and external partners
