As a constable in the VIA Rail Police service, you will discharge your duties in compliance with the Railway Safety Act and enforce federal or provincial laws related to the protection of property owned, possessed or administered by VIA and to the protection of people and goods on VIA property. The responsibilities of a constable in the VIA Rail Police service include protecting VIA passengers, employees and property, preventing and detecting crime, preserving the peace, maintaining law and order, responding to emergencies, participating in planned law enforcement operations as well as conducting minor investigations

Responsibilities:

• Enforce Part III of the Canada Transportation Act and federal or provincial laws, insofar as they relate to the protection of property owned, possessed or administered by VIA and to the protection of people and goods on VIA property;

• Proactively patrol in the areas assigned to you, including in stations and trains and along tracks, and intervene as necessary in certain situations;

• Provide an initial response to a priority call for service in order to ensure the safety and security of VIA passengers and employees;

• Assist other officers and first responders;

• Intervene in response to incidents that require a police presence and that you witness while on duty;

• Arrest individuals as instructed by the police force, in accordance with regulations;

• Carry out minor investigations and assist other departments and the regional police in accordance with policy and procedure;

• Build and maintain partnerships with law enforcement and intelligence agencies;

• Liaise regularly with government regulatory agencies and other transportation agencies and associations;

• Build, maintain and promote harmonious relations both internally and with the communities VIA serves, including businesses, schools, community groups, individuals and other emergency services;

• Use intelligence-led and problem-oriented policing strategies, programs and tactics;

• Initiate and participate in crime prevention programs;

• Promote safety at railway crossings and on railway property, and enforce rules against unauthorized access;

• Carry out physical safety inspections and risk assessments and recommend measures to reduce risk and vulnerability. Requirements :
• Have graduated as a constable from basic training at a recognized Canadian police college (or academy);

• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;

• Have at least 5 years of experience as a police officer and have been on active duty in an accredited Canadian police force within the past 12 months;

• Undergo an in-depth background check as part of the selection process:
Be able to obtain and keep a federal attestation of personnel security, secret status, have no criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted, not be the subject of any pending criminal charges and demonstrate the conduct, skills and qualities required for the position;

• Pass the following evaluations in order to be considered as a candidate and to maintain your position thereafter:
Medical examination prior to employment, standard physical aptitude tests for police (before hiring, and every year thereafter), VIA Rail Canada Police service standards for firearms and use of force (upon hire and every year thereafter);

• Be able to drive a police car safely and in compliance with standards, and hold a valid permit to drive an emergency vehicle in the province where you work;

• Be willing to travel and to work variable shifts;

• Excellent oral communication skills in both official languages;

• Solid written communication skills in English or French.
