About the AFN
The AFN is an advocacy organization that takes direction and fulfills mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development of policy, public education, and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.
The AFN was created out of a desire among First Nations leadership for a strong and effective collective advocacy organization. From this, values such as respect for human rights, diversity, justice, and the sovereignty of each rights-holding First Nation guide the work of the organization.
Position Overview
The Senior Policy Analyst conducts research, analyzes information, and provides recommendations for policy development, interpretation, and application in support of First Nations priorities. This position is responsible for achieving defined work plans and objectives that align with AFN’s national advocacy positions, interests, and strategies. The role may require occasional travel.
Key Responsibilities
Gather and analyze complex statistical and qualitative information relevant to First Nations issues, reviewing existing research and writing reports on findings and conclusions.
Develop and support policies by collecting and interpreting relevant data and engaging with key stakeholders.
Make recommendations regarding policy, programs, processes, and procedures that impact First Nations.
Collaborate with other AFN policy staff to ensure coordinated and coherent policy development across sectors.
Maintain and update relevant datasets and information repositories.
Participate in the development and implementation of sector-specific work plans.
Contribute to team-wide strategic and tactical planning processes in alignment with First Nations priorities.
Respond to information and action requests and communicate relevant updates across the sector and organization.
Build and maintain productive relationships and networks with First Nations communities at the regional and national levels.
Contribute to the development and execution of work plans within the sector and broader policy team.
Collaborate with colleagues across AFN to ensure consistent policy approaches.
Maintain sector-relevant data systems and support internal knowledge-sharing.
Build and maintain strategic partnerships with First Nations, both within communities and at regional and national levels, to gather and validate relevant information.
Respond promptly to policy issues, action items, and requests for information, ensuring effective communication across AFN departments.
Attend Chiefs-in-Assembly meetings, committees, or working group meetings and prepare meeting summaries related to assigned policy areas.
Represent the AFN at events, forums, or meetings as directed.
Participate as an active member of the policy team by contributing to planning and delivering strategic and operational goals aligned with First Nations priorities.
Submit leave and administrative requests to the assigned Director.
Primarily office-based with regular travelrequiredfor meetings, community engagement, and events.
