Position Overview
Position Overview The Senior Policy Analyst takes directions from and reports to the Director, Languages and Learning. The incumbent will conduct research, analyze, develop, coordinate and deliver policy briefings, reports and other written material related to artificial intelligence (AI) and its implications for First Nations, including AI governance, First Nations data sovereignty and related policy issues. The position is responsible for the achievement of defined work plans and objectives aimed at supporting and advancing AFN’s national advocacy positions, interests and strategies in First Nations Language & Learning related issues and priorities.
At times, this position is required to travel. Reporting to the Director, Language and Learning, the Senior Policy Analyst – AI will have the following,
Key Responsibilities Gathers and analyzes statistical information, reviews and assesses existing research, and prepares reports and briefings on findings related to AI and First Nations priorities with high complexity requiring expertise knowledge.
Makes recommendations to inform the development of AI-related policies through research and engagement with First Nations and AI stakeholders.
Makes recommendations related to First Nations AI policies, governance, data sovereignty and program development, processes and procedures within a broad scope (strategic) and impact on First Nations.
Assist with the preparation of AFN resolutions and policy papers related to AI.
Make recommendations in the development of policies by collecting and analyzing statistical data.
Works with other Sector staff to share information, recommend approaches, discuss challenges and potential solutions, etc.
Assists with the preparation, coordination, processing, editing and completion of Sector materials such as briefing notes, speaking notes, PowerPoint presentations, annual reports, reports, quarterly reports, updates, letters, memos, brochures, postcards, e-bulletins, email, articles, papers, and record of decisions (minutes), invitations, workplans etc. To be done with specified timelines. All final approved documents to be filed in the record keeping system – Laserfiche.
Attends and take notes at Chiefs-in-Assembly (Annual General Assembly and Special Chiefs Assembly) meetings held twice annually in July in different locations and December in the Ottawa area.
Assists with the planning and coordination of the Sector’s Chiefs Committees, Technical Committees, and/or Working Groups, as required.
Monitors and/or attend Parliamentary standing committees as required.
Assist Director with reporting requirements of funding agreements.
Submits vacation, sick and special requests through the leave system to the Director.
Conducts other duties as assigned by the Director.
Working Conditions Primarily office-based, with frequent travel required for meetings, community engagements, and events.
Availability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, as necessary to meet organizational needs.
Ability to handle high-pressure situations and adapt to changing circumstances.
Physical and Mental Demands Prolonged periods of sitting and computer use.
Capacity to manage complex and sensitive issues with professionalism, discretion, and cultural sensitivity.
Emotional resilience and the ability to navigate politically sensitive and challenging environments in a professional and effective manner.
Who can apply Post secondary degree in political science or social science, computer science, information technology or a related field of study and 5 to 7 years of directly relevant senior experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
A minimum of 5+years of positive experience with First Nations and First Nations programs and policies
Advanced knowledge and expertise of AI with demonstrated understanding of its impact on First Nations communities
Advanced experience of analyzing large sets of complex and changing policy issues and data, and communicating it concisely, ensuring clarity to different audiences, including senior leadership.
