About the AFN
The AFN is an advocacy organization that takes direction and fulfills mandates as directed by First Nations in-Assembly through resolutions. As a national advocacy organization for First Nations, the AFN seeks to advance First Nations Inherent and Treaty Rights through the development of policy, public education, and where applicable, the co-development of legislation to build First Nations capacity.
The AFN was created out of a desire among First Nations leadership for a strong and effective collective advocacy organization. From this, values such as respect for human rights, diversity, justice, and the sovereignty of each rights-holding First Nation guide the work of the organization.
Position Overview
The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Information Desk Lead to oversee the coordination and delivery of Information Desk services supporting First Nations individuals and caregivers applying for compensation under the First Nations Child and Family Services (FNCFS) and Jordan’s Principle Settlement.
Reporting to the Director of Children, Families and Social Development, the Information Desk Lead provides operational leadership, conducts research and analysis, develops recommendations, and supports the achievement of objectives that advance the AFN’s advocacy priorities and implementation efforts related to the Settlement.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate and oversee Information Desk services that support First Nations individuals and caregivers throughout the compensation application process.
Conduct research, analyze data and trends, and develop reports and recommendations to support the effective implementation of the compensation process.
Develop, coordinate, and deliver briefings, reports, presentations, and other communications related to the Information Desk and Settlement initiatives.
Respond to inquiries and provide accurate, timely information regarding the compensation process.
Collaborate with internal teams to share information, address challenges, and identify opportunities to improve processes, procedures, and service delivery.
Build and maintain effective relationships with First Nations leadership, communities, organizations, and government partners to support engagement and outreach activities.
Represent the Information Desk at meetings, events, conferences, and outreach activities, including delivering presentations as required.
Provide strategic advice and recommendations to the Director on Information Desk operations, compensation-related issues, and public awareness initiatives.
Provide guidance, support, and task coordination for Information Desk staff, including identifying training and development needs.
Assist with the planning and development of materials, reports, and communications for key organizational initiatives, milestones, and reporting requirements.
Who can apply
Bachelor's degree in social sciences, psychology, counselling, or a related field.
Minimum three (3) years of experience working with First Nations communities, organizations, and leadership.
Minimum five (5) years of experience providing support services to at-risk populations.
Strong knowledge of First Nations child and family services, including Jordan's Principle, and Indigenous policy issues.
Demonstrated experience building relationships with governments, partners, and stakeholders.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with tact, diplomacy, and sound judgment.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
Bilingualism (English and French) is considered an asset.
Crisis intervention training or experience is considered an asset.
Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) Check.
Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS).
Willingness and ability to travel, as required.
Position Authority
The Information Desk Lead requires strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to navigate complex client needs within a collaborative and client-focused environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the implementation of the compensation process and assisting applicants with professionalism, empathy, and a commitment to culturally safe service delivery.
