Position Summary

This position is a part-time, term‑limited position funded for five years from the date of hire.
This job will be open and accepting applications until January 11th, 2026.

The Community Outdoor Leader (COL) is responsible for working with Generation Wild of the Uncompahgre (GWU) partner agencies to design and implement outdoor recreation programs and support coalition operations. The position works closely with external community partners to understand the needs, opportunities, and barriers of their specific constituencies and design responsive programs. The COL organizes, plans, leads, evaluates, and promotes programs, activities, and events provided for GWU partners.

This direct outdoor recreation support comprises approximately 60% of the duties.

In addition to direct outdoor programming responsibilities, the COL assists in facilitating GWU Coalition operations to sustain a coalition of outdoor recreation providers and community agencies with the common mission to help youth in the community develop relationships with nature. This includes assisting with GWU communication, marketing, program planning, and evaluation, as well as facilitating the GWU Community Leadership group. These duties comprise approximately 40% of the COL duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following are examples of primary duties assigned to this position. Other related duties may be assigned.

Programming

Plans, organizes, leads, promotes, and implements recreation programs for program participants, and provides support to all GWU programming.

Observes, monitors, and evaluates recreation programs and activities to assess quality and gather input from patrons on present and future needs.

Advises on and reports to supervisor on recommended policies, procedures, training, methods, and rules.

Provides on‑site supervision and leadership and monitors recreation programs, activities, and special events. Makes periodic and special reports, accident and incident reports, and maintains records of program operations and results.

Maintains inventory, upkeep, and proper maintenance of program equipment and supplies.

Implements new program ideas by identifying activities that align with the mission of the Recreation District, district patrons, and Generation Wild of the Uncompahgre.

Designs, develops, and leads comprehensive plans for introductory outdoor recreation outings to reach individuals and build relationships with nature.

Assists with transportation, administration, and facilitation of activities and programs.

Exemplifies environmental stewardship and respect, and provides leadership to program participants, staff, and volunteers in proper Leave No Trace ethics.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Administration

Attends and participates in professional group and staff meetings.

Attends regular meetings with GWU partner agencies.

Identifies local and national trends to inform planning of future recreational program needs.

Participates in developing and implementing goals, objectives, and strategies for recreation programs and activities.

Recommends resources, staffing, training, equipment, materials, and supplies needed for program implementation.

Assists in monitoring program revenues and expenditures.

Prepares program descriptions and information, and assists in developing program budgets and fees.

Assists in generating the monthly GWU newsletter for partner agencies; supports overall agency marketing efforts.

Manages and updates GWU social media accounts.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
