Position Overview
This position will be included in the low census rotation for up to 24 hours each 7 week period.
The Emergency Department Nurse is responsible for providing age appropriate emergent and non-emergent nursing care to all patients in the emergency department. The Emergency Department Nurse must be able to function independently or as a member of a team to meet the needs of the patient. The Emergency Department Nurse must possess advanced knowledge and skills in the treatment of pediatric patients, trauma patients, critically ill or injured patients, and assist the physician in all forms of medical resuscitation.
The Emergency Department Nurse needs to be able to prioritize patients’ care, and anticipate the needs of patients. The Emergency Department Nurse must possess advanced assessment skills and triage skills. As a member of the health care team, serves to meet the needs of the patient, their family and other members of the community by providing quality nursing care and emotional or spiritual support in times of crisis.
Functions
- Does a triage assessment on every patient that enters the Emergency Department and prioritizes the patient’s care.
- Anticipates potential changes in patient conditions based on chief complaint, current nursing assessment, and response to therapy.
- Documents accurately and completely on the Emergency Department Patient Record.
- Is used as a resource person to ancillary nursing departments, staff and physicians.
- Has advanced skills in technical procedures such as IV therapy, trauma resuscitation, medical resuscitation, arterial lines, and fluid warming.
- Communicates effectively with physicians, co-workers and patients.
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods. Fine motor skills. Visual acuity.
- Education:
Graduation from an accredited nursing program with a Bachelor’s, Associates, or Diploma in Nursing. - Training and
Experience:
BCLS on hire. ACLS and PALS or ENPC required within 9 months of hire. TNCC within one year of hire. Previous Emergency Department experience preferred. - Job Knowledge:
Competencies in triage, 12-lead ECG, age specific, and latex allergy/sensitivity.
