Position: Respiratory Care Practitioner, Advanced (PRN)

Respiratory Care Practitioner, Advanced (PRN)

At Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital in Mooresville, North Carolina, this position involves performing and evaluating diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures within the Respiratory Care Services scope, in neonatal, pediatric and adult populations.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties of a Respiratory Care Practitioner, including evaluating appropriateness of medical orders.
  • Apply mechanical ventilator modalities and non‑invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPV), CPAP, BiPAP.
  • Perform endotracheal intubation under supervision and extubations.
  • Serve as a member of the code/emergency team.
  • Administer medical gases, insert nasogastric or orogastric tubes, and perform tracheostomy tube changes.
  • Perform capnography monitoring, transport ventilated patients, interpret clinical data to optimize patient goals.
  • Participate in clinical rounds and assist with bronchoscopy.
  • Assist with orientation and training of Level I RT.
  • Ensure safe operation of devices in MRI and qualify for hyperbaric chamber certification if applicable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Clinical decision‑making appropriate for all age groups.
  • Competency validation for Level I Respiratory Therapist.
  • Ability to lift or push >30 lbs and carry a 20‑lb emergency airway bag.
  • Walking, running, climbing, and bending as required.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
Education

Completion of a 2‑year AMA‑approved respiratory care program (Associate’s Degree or equivalent). Must maintain annual skill‑maintenance, safety/compliance, and North Carolina licensure requirements.

Experience

Six months to one year of clinical experience following graduation from a respiratory care program.

Licensure & Certifications
  • North Carolina State Licensure Registry (RRT) by the National Association for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRPS) if applicable.
Essential Physical Job Functions

Requires lifting or pushing in excess of 30 lbs, walking, running, climbing, bending, and carrying an emergency airway bag (~20 lb).
