The smallest of Duke Health’s four hospitals (123‑bed), it offers a comprehensive range of medical services, including 24‑hour emergency care, cardiology, orthopedics, women’s services, and surgical specialties.
Responsibilities- Level I
Demonstrates proficiency by performing routine and emergency echocardiograms, including but not limited to 2‑dimensional, 3‑dimensional, Doppler, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography, as requested by physicians and in accordance with standard practices. Provides echocardiography service at all necessary locations, working variable shifts, weekends, and providing emergent call coverage as scheduled. Operates equipment necessary to perform all required procedures and to obtain optimal diagnostic recording;
utilizes ancillary devices such as selected transducers, digital networking system, off‑line analysis systems. Maintains equipment in working order, making minor adjustments and repairs. Performs routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and reports any equipment malfunction to the echo lab manager. Analyzes patient’s medical record to obtain history of symptoms and necessary information for performance of diagnostic procedures. Prepares preliminary reports for review and interpretation by cardiologists, including comparison of previous studies.
Participates in quality improvement activities, evaluates procedure results for technical quality and accuracy, maintains appropriate logs, files, and records. Reviews department performance in relation to established goals, implementing changes to effect outcomes. Maintains confidentiality of patients, employees, and corporation‑related activities. Instructs students, fellows, nurses, or health personnel as requested. Communicates technical and patient care related information according to established processes and timelines.
Attends echo lab meetings, participates in echo‑related conferences, ensuring continuing education and professional growth. Cultivates a collaborative and cooperative work environment within the department. - Level II
Actively participates with patient testing, performing routine, non‑routine, urgent, and emergent patient requests as described in the Cardiac Sonographer Level I job description. Performs advanced cardiac ultrasound services and procedures to patients utilizing independent judgment, with real‑time and off‑line manipulation of echo cardiographic images for capture, display, and analysis of echo cardiographic data. Assists physicians with echocardiography‑guided studies to aid in complex procedures, decreasing potential procedural risks.
Acts as a resource and assists cardiac sonographers and cardiology fellows with pre‑/post‑procedures, preliminary review of images, and reporting. Acts as a preceptor by onboarding cardiac sonographers with departmental orientation, in‑service and education. Assists in establishing and maintaining department objectives and goals by functioning as a site charge sonographer. Supports and recommends quality assurance initiatives. - Level III – Clinical Focus
Performs advanced cardiac ultrasound services and procedures to patients such as congenital, myocardial mechanics, 3‑D imaging, and stress using independent judgment. Functions as an expert resource, instructing other cardiac sonographers with in‑services and education regarding performance and preliminary interpretation of these procedures. Performs quality assurance to ensure that all necessary echocardiography data are obtained for the patient based on clinical history and presentation.
Formulates and ensures consistent implementation of exam protocols. Provides in‑service education and case reviews for staff cardiac sonographers in collaboration with the Echocardiography Technical Manager concerning new methods and techniques.…
