Role SummaryAs a Broadband Technician II
, you will perform intermediate to complex installations, disconnects and service changes for residential customers, including FTTH (Fiber to the Home RFoG and GPON). Services include video, HSD, and home phone. You will do moderate troubleshooting, underground and/or aerial construction, splicing, repair, maintenance, and support customer‑focused activities. You must be knowledgeable about field concepts, practices, and procedures within telecommunications. Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, you must reside within a 60‑minute drive of the Mooresville, NC warehouse.
You may be hired at Broadband Technician I, II or III depending on skills and qualifications. See the specific posting for each level’s minimum qualifications.
Responsibilities- Perform intermediate and complex installation of cable wiring and hardware from tap/MST to customer equipment for both single and multi‑family or commercial dwellings over Fiber Optic and Coax.
- Inspect and correct NESC safety violations for new construction and new service drops, coordinate underground drop burial work, submit permits, and track status in systems.
- Execute new connects, reconnects, disconnects, upgrades, downgrades, relocations, outlet installations, fiber connections, and hard‑line cutovers.
- Utilize test equipment (Locators, TDR, FDR, OTDR, signal level meters) to identify and repair signal strength issues, read system maps and blueprints, and climb poles or use bucket trucks as required.
- Comply with quality control guidelines and regulations (OSHA, FCC, NEC, NESC).
- Record system and drop information on work orders, surveys, and referrals.
- Promote company services and educate customers on usage, additions, and channel lineups.
- 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience or current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
- 6+ months of fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing, repair, installation, or switch training.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Adherence to TDS attendance guidelines.
- Must complete customer‑specific background checks.
- Availability for on‑call/standby and occasional travel; willingness to work overtime.
- Successful completion of the Safety Course curriculum.
- Compliance with DOT requirements for vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVRW.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and teamwork.
- Experience with computer applications or burial construction.
- Familiarity with company products and services.
- Organizational skills and multitasking ability.
- Customer service and sales skills; effective communication (verbal and written).
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Physical ability to dig, lift, and climb.
- Completion of SCTE Broadband Premise Technician course.
- SCTE Service Technician Certification (Technical Foundation, Customer Service, Troubleshooting) or SCTE BDS or NCTI Installer Technician Course.
- Completion of SCTE Installer Certification.
Work requires sitting, standing, writing, operating computer equipment, and frequent communication with customers. Tasks include moving, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, and climbing. May lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Work may be outdoors or in mechanical rooms, under extreme weather conditions, with exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.
