Join Lancaster City Council as a Motor Vehicle Technician and play a vital role in keeping our community moving safely. You’ll ensure our fleet and public vehicles meet DVSA standards, achieving a 100% MOT initial pass rate. Your expertise will support community safety, environmental goals, and the smooth running of essential services. To help support our exciting plans for the future, we are seeking a highly motivated and driven Motor Vehicle Technician to work within Lancaster City Council’s Vehicle Maintenance Unit to deliver a first‑class service to both the council and private customers.
Based at the White Lund Depot in Morecambe, this post has the responsibility for looking after and maintaining the council’s fleet, so they remain in good serviceable condition for front‑line services.
As a Motor Vehicle Technician working within the Vehicle Maintenance Unit, you will be maintaining the vehicles and equipment used by front‑line services that are essential to the upkeep of the district and the health and wellbeing of its residents. The unit also carries out over 600 taxi tests a year, plus private servicing repairs and MOTs. You’ll independently manage vehicle maintenance, repairs, and MOT preparations for council and public vehicles.
Driving LGV class 2 vehicles, you’ll present vehicles for testing, carry out diagnostics, and provide technical guidance. Your role includes training colleagues, maintaining health and safety standards, and supporting out‑of‑hours breakdown cover.
This is a permanent position based at the White Lund Depot, working 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday on a shift pattern basis. Current shift patterns are Monday to Thursday 07:00-15:00 and 08:30-16:30, and Friday 07:00-14:30 and 08:30-16:00. Shift patterns may be adjusted in the future in accordance with the working practices and requirements of the service. You will also be required to provide out‑of‑hours vehicle breakdown cover, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays, on a shift roster.
You may be required to undertake standby duties to cover out‑of‑hours work.
Qualifications and experience:
You hold an NVQ Level 3 in Light Vehicle Repairs or Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent), and ideally have previous experience in a similar role. Experience of vehicle electrics, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems would be desirable. You hold a current LGV Class 2 driving licence and have at least two years’ experience as a Motor Vehicle Mechanic. You’re a creative thinker who can deliver at pace, think outside the box, and work well under pressure while communicating effectively.

You must be able to work on a shift roster, if necessary, in accordance with the needs of the service. Lancaster City Council declared a climate emergency and will work towards reducing carbon emissions to net‑zero by 2030. As part of this role, you will be expected to participate in and work towards reducing carbon emissions.
