Descriptionof Work
This temporary position will provide field research support to monitor the Crystal skipper (a small, brown butterfly described as a new species in 2015) along Bogue Banks, NC. The primary tasks include fieldwork, lab work, and data management for a grant‑funded research project on how urbanization and climate change are impacting the Crystal skipper butterfly.
Job Duties and Responsibilities• Survey sites for Crystal skipper presence and abundance.
• Measure habitat and environmental variables.
• Observe and handle Crystal skippers for demographic experiments and surveys.
• Enter and manage data.
• Safely handle small wildlife, especially insects.
• Contribute to outreach and communication activities related to the Crystal skipper.
Technicians will work as part of a research team while also performing tasks independently. The primary workstation is located at the NC State University Center for Marine Sciences and Technology in Morehead City, NC.
- Working in hot, humid, and wet conditions.
- Knowledge of biological principles.
- Experience in ecological field and lab research.
- Experience collecting and entering data.
High school or GED diploma and one year of experience related to knowledge, skills, and abilities in the area of assignment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
