The primary role of a CVE Inspector I is to inspect commercial vehicles to determine compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, size and weight compliance, highway use, and other state requirements for commercial vehicles that travel in Kentucky. The inspector is assigned to one of the 13 facilities throughout the Commonwealth, serving Rowan County. As part of the Kentucky State Police, the CVE inspector’s role is paramount to the mission of highway safety.
Key Responsibilities- Learns statutes, regulations, policies and procedures related to commercial vehicle enforcement.
- Under supervision, inspects drivers and vehicles for compliance with federal and state laws and regulations to include crawling under vehicles to physically inspect for safety defects and violations, checking for cargo securement and issuing citations when appropriate.
- Under supervision, inspects for hazardous materials cargo, determining if any violations of hazardous material regulations exist and issuing citations when appropriate.
- Under supervision, checks for size and weight compliance; issues citations when appropriate.
- Completes all necessary paperwork.
- Communicates issues appropriately through the chain of command.

One year of experience in the maintenance or repair of automotive or powered equipment will substitute for the required education.
Must be 21 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation prior to employment. Within 12 months of employment in this job classification must successfully pass part A and part B of the North American Standard Inspections test as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at weigh facilities conducting commercial vehicle inspections.
