Clinical Pharmacist III - Critical Care Specialty/PGY-1 Residency Director (Finance)
Riverside University Health System - Medical Center is seeking a Clinical Pharmacist III - Critical Care Specialist, who will also serve as the PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Director. Residency training is required for this role and prior experience as a Residency Program Director/Coordinator preferred. This position is distinguished from the Supervising Clinical Pharmacist, who has full supervisory responsibility for staff and oversees day-to-day operations.
This role requires a high level of independent judgment, oversight of junior staff, and management of the most complex assignments, demanding strong critical thinking, prioritization, organizational skills, and extensive expertise. Incumbents act as subject matter experts within their specialty area of practice.
The Riverside University Health System Medical Center is a 439-bed facility, a designated Stroke Center, Level I Trauma Center, and home to the region s only Pediatric ICU.
Responsibilities
- Provide answers to both distributive and clinical questions; monitor the work of lower level staff to ensure adherence to established policies and procedures; resolve problems and issues arising from pharmacy operations and ensure the smooth workflow of services.
- Work with nurses, physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure optimal patient care; collaborate with other members of the medical center to foster a cooperative work environment; participate in regional or national organizations in pharmacy services; provide information and interdepartmental educational support to all levels of healthcare providers (via grand rounds, continuing education lectures, etc.).
- Assist in the development and implementation of new policies and procedures and provide input to supervisors and management; lead projects pertaining to the pharmacy area.
- Assist with training of new and existing personnel on departmental procedures and participate in maintaining quality assurance records.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Serve as patient advocate in matters related to pharmacotherapy; develop staff education materials for medical center staff.
- Maintain performance improvement processes to improve the medication use process; serve on health system committees and participate in cost savings/quality improvement projects.
- Provide specialized pharmaceutical care with emphasis on clinical monitoring and therapeutic interventions to improve patient outcomes; assist and provide training to residents and pharmacy students.
- Contribute to advancement of RUHS pharmacy services; participate in scholarly research activities and system-wide projects that demonstrate improved patient outcomes.
- Participate in ongoing medication use evaluation programs by establishing criteria for cost effectiveness/control utilization, process indicators and monitoring parameters; conduct evaluations to determine compliance to criteria; summarize results.
- Contribute to patient care teams by providing medication use expertise to providers, nurses and others via multichannel communication, including chart notes, SBAR, rounding, in-person debriefs, and consultations.

Graduation from a School of Pharmacy accredited by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm.
D.).
Experience:
Completion of accredited pharmacy residency, PGY-1. Five years of post-residency within current area of specialty as a pharmacist in a hospital or ambulatory care setting. - OPTION II Education:
Graduation from a School of Pharmacy accredited by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm.
D.).
Experience:
Two years of specialty residency PGY-1 and PGY-2; three years of post-residency within current area of specialty as a pharmacist in a hospital or ambulatory care setting. - Option III on job spec is not applicable for this role.
Licensure & Certification
- Possession of a valid California Driver s License.
- Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Licentiate in Pharmacy issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy and fulfillment of continuing education requirements.
- Possession of a specialty board certification by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) in a specialty area of existing practice and/or Advanced Practice Pharmacist licensure issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of drug distribution systems and provision of clinical pharmacy services; system development and implementation of drug distribution and/or clinical systems/services; quality assurance and continuous quality improvement; principles of effective supervision; good customer service; professional standards and practices; laws and guidelines pertaining to patient care and dispensing of medications.
