Overview

As a Class Steel Welder, you will be expected to work within a team of Welders to achieve minimum production time, standards and quality in keeping with company policies, while maintaining a positive and motivated team environment. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

The individual must have working knowledge of procedures, strong welding aptitude and the ability to follow directions. The individual must possess experience in the trade, knowledge of ship terminology, ability to interpret engineering drawings. The individual must demonstrate ability to interpret job specifications and perform work on marine vessels.

Responsibilities
  • Work within a team of Welders to achieve minimum production time, standards and quality in keeping with company policies.
  • Follow engineering drawings and job specifications; interpret construction drawings, job specifications, instruction manuals, manufacturer’s handbooks, change orders and contract specifications to obtain weld sizing information and material edge preparation requirements.
  • Weld with various techniques and positions as required (fillets, T-Bar wraps, gussets, frames, terminations, etc.) and demonstrate ability to weld continuous welds and multi-pass fillets with minimal cosmetic corrections.
  • Demonstrate ability to interpret job specifications and perform work on marine vessels.
  • Maintain and perform routine preventive maintenance on welding equipment; wear required PPE.
  • Read and interpret ship terminology and demonstrate the ability to backstep, sequence welds, and work from provided information and/or good welding practices.
  • Mentor and assist less-skilled workers as needed.
Education/Experience
  • High level of pride in workmanship
  • Ability to weld in uncomfortable positions where applicable
  • Minimum of 1 year as a 2nd-Class Welder at Swiftships producing advance fillet welds or 2 years of Stick, MIG, TIG, and Flux Core welding techniques to weld various components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions
  • Ability to pass 1st Class skills evaluation test to demonstrate welding ability for full penetration joint details
  • Ability to demonstrate their ability to Arc Gouge
  • Demonstrated ability to weld fillets for material thicknesses 4mm-25mm
  • Demonstrated ability to weld gusset toe and wraps with minimal blending required
  • Demonstrated ability to weld frame wraps and terminations with minimal blending required
  • Demonstrated ability to weld T-Bar wraps and terminations with minimal blending required
  • Demonstrated ability to weld into corners / vertical intersections with minimal blending required
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and correct basic weld pick up, with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to terminate stitch welds with minimal weld correction to address minor cosmetic or weld defects
  • Demonstrated ability to weld continuously for 400mm
  • Demonstrated ability to back step and sequence weld based upon provided information and/or good welding practices
  • Demonstrated ability to weld multi-pass fillets with only cosmetic correction required
  • Ability to take direction and follow instructions
  • Good mechanical aptitude with ability to produce consistent quality
  • Ability to inspect and correct basic weld pick-up without supervision
  • Ability to read and interpret and work from construction drawings, job specifications, instruction manuals, manufacturer’s handbooks, change orders and contract specifications to obtain weld sizing information and material edge preparation requirements
  • Ability and willingness to work with and to teach less-skilled workers
  • Ability to maintain and perform routine preventive maintenance on welding equipment
  • Ability to wear required PPE
