Utility Worker I/II – City of Morgan Hill

Position:
Utility Worker I/II – Engineering & Utilities Department

Salary:
Utility Worker I $6,140–$7,836/month ($73,680–$94,032 annually);
Utility Worker II $6,774–$8,646/month ($81,288–$103,752 annually).

Job Overview

Under general supervision, the Utility Worker maintains water supply and wastewater collection system facilities and related equipment. The position can be filled at either Utility Worker I or Utility Worker II level, depending on qualifications and experience.

Class Characteristics
  • Utility Worker I:
    Journey level, performs semi‑skilled work and operates equipment, vehicles, and power tools.
  • Utility Worker II
    :
    Advanced journey level, capable of independent skilled work, lead a small crew, and requires a valid Water Distribution or Treatment Operator Certificate.

Examples of Duties Utility Worker I
  • Maintain wells, chemical feeders, pumps, motors, telemetering equipment, storage facilities, pipelines, sanitary sewers, and pumping equipment.
  • Perform water sampling, field tests, and adjust chemical feeders.
  • Replace chemical drums and maintain reservoir levels.
  • Make minor repairs to tools and equipment.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries and maintain accurate records.
  • Assist crews during emergencies.
Utility Worker II
  • Same duties as I with advanced skills and additional responsibilities in sewer line flushing and pump maintenance programs.
Qualification Requirements Utility Worker I
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Licenses:
    California Class A driver’s permit within 6 months; valid Class A driver’s license within 1 year;
    State of CA Water Distribution Operator Grade I during probation.
  • Other:
    Pass spirometry test; work extended hours; respond to 24‑hour stand‑by; wear respirator; work in confined spaces; ladder climbing up to 50 ft.
  • Knowledge:
    Hand tools, safety practices, basic arithmetic, mechanical maintenance.
  • Skills:

    Follow instructions, build relationships, public interaction.
Utility Worker II
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience:

    Two years semi‑skilled and skilled maintenance on water/wastewater utilities; preference for excavation equipment experience.
  • Licenses:
    State of CA Grade I Water Distribution Certificate at hire;
    Water Treatment Operator or Collection System Maintenance Certificate during probation. Class A driver’s permit and license as above.
  • Other:
    Lead crew responsibilities, extended hours, 24‑hour stand‑by, respirator, spirometry, confined spaces, ladder climbing.
  • Knowledge:
    Extensive tool and equipment practices, backhoe operation, water treatment principles, backhoe safety, mechanical maintenance, backhoe skills.
  • Skills:

    Instruction following, crew leadership, operating backhoe, reading plans, record‑keeping, basic math, public interaction.
Supplemental Information
  • Physically fit to walk, drive, climb, lift up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces.
  • Work in various environmental conditions at office and field sites.
