Math Teacher at NC Department of Adult Correction

Overview

In this role, you will serve as a Math Teacher in our Youth School at Foothills Correctional Institution, Morganton, NC. This position provides support and instruction in core academic areas to students pursuing a high school equivalency diploma. The work requires flexibility and a strong work ethic, with opportunities to contribute as a core member of the academic team, organizing and delivering curricula to groups of students in a correctional setting.

The Math Teacher will teach content focused on increasing basic skills in mathematics through individual, small group, and whole class instruction, and provide targeted remediation and enrichment as needed.

• Design lessons and instructional materials based on best practices in mathematics with clear learning targets and measurable goals aligned with Common Core, College and Career Readiness standards, and NC state standards.
• Provide direct group and individual instruction based on assessment of student progress using formative and summative data to meet individual needs, motivate participation, and support transitions within the academic school and beyond the prison system.
• Establish and maintain standards of student conduct to support an effective learning environment and school-wide behavior plans.
• Collaborate with fellow teachers and school personnel regarding students on specific caseloads and best instructional practices.

This is a full-time, permanent position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. This is a year-round position.

Compensation for certified educators in NC Department of Public Instruction alignment is based on the NC Department of Public Instruction Salary Schedule, which is approved annually by the NC General Assembly and sets pay based on experience and education level.

Department of Adult Correction (DAC) is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced after conviction for violations of North Carolina laws, including State Prisons, Correction Enterprises, the Division of Community Supervision, and the Division of Rehabilitation & Reentry.

Foothills Correctional Institution is located in Morganton, NC. The facility houses close-custody male offenders, primarily ages 18 to 25, and includes educational and vocational programs as well as different job assignments. Foothills Correctional is home to one of the prison system's four schools for younger offenders.

Effective July 1, 2025, minimum qualifications align with the class specification. The knowledge, skills, and abilities listed should be used to screen for the most qualified applicants.

• Ability to provide effective mathematics instruction at multiple levels using varied instructional strategies
• Ability to manage classroom behavior and maintain an orderly environment
• Ability to use formative and summative data to identify, diagnose, and address learning needs
• Ability to write education plans for groups and individuals
• Certification in multiple subject areas (e.g., mathematics, science)
• Experience with at-risk students and with lessons aligned to College and Career Ready Standards, Common Core, and NC standards
• Experience teaching mathematical skills to students at diverse performance levels
• Experience with various instructional methods aligned to best practices and student needs
• Experience developing and implementing a classroom management plan and providing supports for academic and behavioral challenges
• Experience maintaining accurate records (attendance, grades, assessments, notes)
• Experience interpreting student data and communicating with stakeholders
• Experience using technology tools (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite)
• Flexibility in expectations and instructional plans in a changing environment
