Position: WVU Medicine - Travel Surg Tech

Provides intraoperative care to patients by functioning as the scrub person assisting the surgical team during an operative procedure. The Surgical Technologist, Strategic Staffing Solutions, will be a full-time employee of WVU Medicine and will be placed on assignment at any of our system hospitals and/or clinics.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eighteen (18) months of scrub experience in a tertiary setting AND Current Surgical Technologist Certification through one of the following boards:
  • National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • National Center for Competencies Testing (NCCT)
  • American Allied Health Association (AAHA)

OR Five (5) years of scrub experience in a tertiary setting

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience in multiple specialties preferred
  • Experience in Same Day Surgery setting beneficial
  • Experience working in all trauma levels beneficial

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:
The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.

  • Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile role in the OR.
  • Assists the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field.
  • Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established guidelines.
  • Assists with gowning and gloving surgeons and positioning equipment and instruments.
  • Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.
  • Operates specialty equipment after receiving specific training.
  • Assists with transportation and positioning of the patients.
  • Begin to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
  • Prepares supplies and equipment for surgical procedure following preference cards.
  • Demonstrate appropriate and correct case preparation.
  • Assists with sterilization and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
  • Monitors inventory; orders; and restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Removes out-of-date items and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.
  • Assists with the general cleaning duties of the department.
  • Performs equipment checks as assigned.
  • Assists with clerical work, and record keeping duties including the gathering of indicator data such as frequency of events.
  • Prepares and updates preference cards and instrument tray lists as directed.
  • Assists with the proper recording of patient charges.
  • Unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) may have limited access to medications including during transport of non-controlled substances at the request of a licensed care provider.
  • Able to be a mentor for new hires within 6 months of employment.
  • Call with a response time of 20-45 minutes, dependent upon assignment location call response requirement.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Ability to lift up to 40-pounds and push/pull heavy loaded carts up to 200 lbs
  • Possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
  • Ability to wear lead for extended periods of time.
