Clinical Pharmacy Technician – Ambulatory Care, Transitions of Care Clinic

The role involves securing patient data, providing financial counseling, verifying insurance coverage, and managing clinical information for pre‑certification and authorization. The technician interviews patients for clinical, financial, and historical information, arranges appropriate clinical care, and works independently while overseeing a pharmacist as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current licensure as required by the state board where services are provided:
    • MD:
      Pharmacy Technician License or Pharmacy Technician Student Permit through the Maryland Board of Pharmacy.
    • OH:
      Certified or Registered Pharmacy Technician License or Trainee License through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy.
    • PA:
      No state licenses issued.
    • WV:
      Pharmacy Technician License or Trainee License through the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
  • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Health career Association (NHA).
  • Or, applicant has two (2) or more years of pharmacy‑specific experience, obtained within 15 months of hire.
  • Two (2) years of Pharmacy Technician or healthcare‑related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or post‑high‑school education in a science field of study, or graduation from a pharmacy technician training program.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Draft and send correspondence letters to referral sources when necessary.
  • Gather and document patient demographics, insurance information, needs assessment, patient history, and other data as required.
  • Initiate refill/follow‑up calls and schedule delivery as needed.
  • Provide information and answer patient/caregiver questions; refer to clinician when appropriate.
  • Identify patients requiring pre‑certification or pre‑authorization and notify relevant departments.
  • Contact insurance companies or employers to determine eligibility and benefits.
  • Maintain patient records in a timely and complete manner.
  • Assist the pharmacist with filling and labeling prescriptions.
  • Calculate initial measurements for compounds and maintain compound logs.
  • Provide monographs and other required medication guides with each prescription.
  • Maintain proper storage of medications (security, temperature control, etc.).
  • Communicate effectively with patients of all ages and demonstrate appropriate education and standard for each group.
  • Work with coordinators and managers to develop and attain quarterly objectives.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to policy when interacting with patients, physicians, families, co‑workers, and the public regarding demographic/clinical/financial information.
  • Communicate workflow issues to management promptly.
  • Assist in training pharmacy technicians.
  • Initiate charge anticipation calculations and identify anticipated self‑pay portions accurately.
Physical Requirements
  • Walk, stand, or sit for long periods of time.
  • Lift up to 30 pounds and push up to 50 pounds.
  • Dexterity required to finger, handle, and reach.
Skills and Abilities
  • Proficient use of computers and software applications.
  • Knowledge of drugs, dosing, side effects, indications, contraindications, and proper administration preferred.
  • Knowledge of rules, policies, and regulations related to the dispensation of pharmaceutical drugs preferred.
  • Ability to work accurately, efficiently, and safely in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Polite and respectful communication with staff, physicians, patients, and families.
  • Flexibility to meet departmental or hospital needs, including changes in work volume, scheduling, and emergency call‑backs.
  • Effective verbal and written communication with a strong emphasis on customer service.
