Performs phlebotomy services on inpatients and outpatients, as requested by physicians, in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.
Minimum Qualifications- Completion of a phlebotomy education program or an allied health education program that includes phlebotomy education and a minimum of 50 successful unaided venipunctures.
- Qualification to perform phlebotomy by one or more of the following criteria:
- Certified as a phlebotomist by American Medical Technologist (AMT), National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Society for Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).
- Completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program.
- Completion of a phlebotomy education program that includes 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection.
- Completion of an accredited allied health professional/occupation education program which includes phlebotomy training and completion of 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection.
- Phlebotomy experience in a hospital or clinic setting.
- Performs, in a timely manner, blood collection using established laboratory guidelines designed to acquire acceptable specimens used in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to meet the needs of patients, as requested by the ordering provider.
- Follows standard operating procedures to perform basic diagnostic procedures to produce accurate results.
- Operates basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer system, tube transport system, timers) consistent with standard operating procedures.
- Restocks, as required, the work area of needed supplies to assist co‑workers in the performance of their duties.
- Must demonstrate, after receiving instruction and training, knowledge of the patient care requirements for all age groups as required by the laboratory standard operating procedures.
- Utilizes time, material, and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing and arranging workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
- Promptly collects patient specimens, to reduce wastage of time, materials and resources, unnecessary requests for additional specimens, and undue delays in result reporting, in accordance with the standard operating procedure.
- Completes assigned workload within established time frames by adjusting organization of workload, (e.g., daily monitoring, turnaround time studies).
- Maintains effective communication with the laboratory sections, administrative office, coworkers, personnel, patients and other departments as necessary to assure identification of problems and provide problem resolution in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.
- Answers the telephone in a prompt and courteous manner, identifying self and unit.
- Participates in various activities (i.e., staff meetings, in services, health screens, etc.) and keeps current in all communications (e.g., reading circulated material, staff meetings, mailboxes, e‑mail and procedures) incorporating new information into routine use.
- Effectively communicates in a timely manner any unusual supply usage or critical supply level to the supervisor to expedite ordering of required supplies for the continual needs of patients.
- Refers to supervisor or nursing staff as appropriate any technical problems or unusual patient occurrences.
- Contacts nursing staff and/or ordering provider promptly for clarification of unclear or incomplete test requisitions/orders; requesting new requisitions/orders in accordance with established laboratory policies.
- Notifies patient care units promptly of uncollected patient specimens in order to expedite accurate test results in a timely manner.
- Communicates all appropriate information to patients and/or the public necessary for their understanding of the procedure before, during and after designated procedure.
