Job Summary

The incumbent will maintain embryology and hormone laboratories according to CAP and CLIA standards. Primary duties include performing laboratory testing in the hormone lab and procedures in the embryology lab of the Reproductive Endocrine Laboratory at the WVU Center for Reproductive Medicine. The technologist will also support a small team in embryology, andrology, and hormone analyses, serving as backup in the andrology lab.

Weekend rotations and holiday coverage are required, with at least one weekend per month and likely two in three weeks.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science OR Bachelor’s degree in a chemical or biological science, OR 30+ years of previous experience qualifying under CLIA grandfathered exception.
  • Current licensure as required by the state board where services will be provided: WV medical laboratory scientist license or trainee license.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist laboratory director to maintain hormone, embryology, and andrology labs in accordance with CAP, CLIA, and SART guidelines.
  • Perform or oversee all hormone and embryology laboratory quality control and assurance procedures.
  • Order and maintain inventory and equipment for hormone and embryology labs.
  • Perform patient hormone testing; proficient in serum specimen testing using automated equipment.
  • Perform embryology procedures: in vitro culture of gametes/embryos, isolation of oocytes, classification of oocytes/zygotes/embryos, micromanipulation, cryopreservation, and embryo transfer.
  • Assist in andrology lab as needed, including semen analyses, sperm cryopreservation, and semen preparation for IUI or ART.
  • Work regular weekend and holiday rotations and cover emergency services.
  • Report patient data upon completion using an electronic medical system.
  • Maintain laboratory database, patient accession logs, reagent logs, SDS, and records.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with privacy policies.
  • Demonstrate flexibility for changes in volume, scheduling, and emergencies.
  • Participate in performance and quality improvement.
  • Implement new or updated testing procedures under lab director’s guidance.
  • Supervise students and ancillary personnel in the hormone lab.
  • Train new personnel in hormone testing procedures.
  • Communicate with physicians regarding hormone testing results.
  • Report unsafe/hazardous conditions per hospital policy.
  • Communicate workflow issues promptly to lab director.
  • Communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and occasional lifting of objects >50 lb.
  • Must sit for extended periods; must have exceptional visual acuity for microscope use.
  • Must have exceptional manual dexterity for microscopes, pipettes, keyboards, etc.
Working Environment
  • Clinic/laboratory and patient care environment.
  • Embryology procedures performed in a clean room.
Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent laboratory technique and technical proficiency.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, especially customer service and personnel interaction.
  • Exceptional organizational and planning skills.
