Job Description SummaryPerforms a variety of duties to provide assistance and information to all patients, visitors and staff. Enforce WVUH policies and procedures to provide a safe, secure environment in support of the WVUH Security Program.
Minimum Qualifications- High School diploma or equivalent AND 3 years of experience in the security field.
- Associate’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND 1 year of experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND 6 months of experience in the security field.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must attain TASER user certification within one year.
- Valid Driver’s License is required and must be maintained during employment.
- Completion of training requirements for an armed security officer is required.
- Meet all ACT 235 training certification requirements including satisfactory completion of Psychological evaluation, Physical and coursework within 60 days of hire; certification must be maintained.
- Completion of all departmental Lethal Weapon Training and coursework required within one (1) year of hire.
- Obtain certification in Heart Saver First Aid within 60 days of hire date.
- Successfully pass WV DHHR Protected Services Record Check and WV CARES fingerprint‑based criminal background check.
- Initiate positive customer service interaction and provide appropriate assistance to hospital patients, visitors and staff to facilitate orderly and efficient access to WVUH facilities.
- Maintain consistent visibility and presence at assigned locations to provide information and directional resources for all patients, visitors and staff.
- Respond to all requests for information/assistance in a caring, courteous manner.
- Provide physical, wheelchair, transport, escort services and room access to patients, visitors and staff.
- Monitor and maintain traffic flow in WVUH parking areas and roadways, assisting disabled vehicles, issuing parking permits and warning violations.
- Protect people and property by helping prevent accidents, theft and vandalism in accordance with WVUH and department policies.
- Respond to unusual or emergency situations using appropriate escalation of force, up to and including armed response by following established protocol.
- Perform routine building rounds, building door unlocks, exterior building and parking lot patrol.
- Make recommendations to management, staff, visitors and patients to improve security and prevent accidents and crime.
- Report suspicious situations, circumstances, incidents and persons according to WVUH and department policy.
- Assist during fire and disaster drills, animal control issues, transportation of valuables, and lost/found issues.
- Document activities, incidents, premises safety, accidents, theft, vandalism and other data requested by supervision in a factual, objective and legible manner.
- Respond and assist patients, visitors and staff during emergencies such as assaults, domestic disputes, fires, vandalism, bomb threats, theft, vehicle accidents, disasters, etc.
- Perform patient restraint as directed by clinical staff and be capable of physical intervention when appropriate.
- Operate hospital‑owned vehicles safely and responsibly.
- Ensure safety and proper operating condition of vehicles through inspections as outlined by departmental policy.
- Ability to sit, stand and walk for the entire shift and/or double shift.
- Ability to lift, push or pull 80 pounds.
- Ability to tolerate adverse environmental conditions for the entire shift and/or double shift.
- May frequently be exposed to outside weather conditions while performing duties.
- Perform effectively under stressful situations.
- Make good decisions.
- Organize and maintain document controls.
