The Person al Rapid Transit (PRT) Department at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a PRT Electrician II.
About the Opportunity:
The Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit System (PRT) is an automated public transit system with 73 driverless vehicles, 5 passenger stations, 2 maintenance facilities, 9 miles of dedicated guideway, and related equipment. This position oversees and coordinates activities of workers engaged in repair and maintenance of PRT electrical systems. Responsibilities include the installation, maintenance and repair of power distribution systems and vehicle light rail systems and components.
The role requires working primarily on the midnight shift throughout the transit system, indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. This is a safety-sensitive position and requires drug testing.

- Apply electrical theory and principles to testing, maintenance, and repair of transit system electrical components. Use computers, digital and analog multimeters, voltmeters, high voltage test equipment, and transit-specific instruments. Ensure compliance with National/Local electrical codes and safe work practices.
- Perform detailed scheduled maintenance inspections, troubleshooting, installation, and repairs to PRT installations and ancillary equipment and services, including: 120/240/277/480- and 23000-volt 3-phase power distribution; lighting and remote control devices; remote monitoring and alarm devices; electric motors, fans, generators; PRT vehicle power collectors; PRT vehicle propulsion motors; 23000/575-volt substation testing and maintenance.
- Perform detailed scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and safety inspections of the light rail system and components, including diagnosis, alignment, repair, and overhaul; manage 575-volt 3-phase power distribution and 40 remotely controlled breakers.
- Maintain, troubleshoot and repair 35 miles of power rail and rail heating system (including 65 remotely controlled switching and overload protection devices).
- Perform miscellaneous maintenance support activities, including high voltage testing and repair; implement emergency response plans; communicate with other PRT employees via UHF radio; participate in PRT vehicle recoveries as a MOCU operator. Work in confined spaces; interpret maintenance manuals, schematics, and drawings; organize tools and materials for remote task completion; maintain tool inventory and keys; monitor man-hours and materials; act on the supervisor’s behalf during absence;
support guideway heating system operation and other trades; order electrical parts as needed.

- Formal training in electrical field from an apprenticeship or vocational program up to 18 months beyond high school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least two years’ experience involving: verifiable journeyman-level experience in installation, maintenance and repair of varied electrical systems and equipment. Experience with high voltage and industrial or plant equipment is preferred.
- Knowledge of electrical materials, methods, tools, hazards, and safety practices, including power measuring and troubleshooting equipment and codes. Ability to learn new complex electrical equipment quickly.
- Ability to troubleshoot, perform detailed repairs, and maintain a wide range of complex electrical equipment.
- Knowledge of first aid and CPR techniques.
- Ability to operate boiler plants and guideway heating systems.
- Ability to use electronic devices such as digital volt meters due to system automation.
- Ability to read and interpret complex electrical and hydraulic/pneumatic diagrams.
- Knowledge of mechanical trades safety practices and tools, welding equipment operation.
