The Assistant Quantity Surveyor role is part of the Design Team within Economic Development and Regeneration. It supports the delivery of work stemming from Northumberland County Council’s Corporate and Directorate Strategic Plans and involves a range of construction, design, feasibility projects and capital delivery programmes. The role includes advisory work linked to the Directorate’s responsibilities toward NCC’s Corporate Landlord and Estate Management duties.
As a member of a sixteen‑strong team, you will work on diverse projects that improve community, school, leisure, office and other NCC‑owned buildings and services. The position requires close collaboration with appointed internal and external consultants and will involve travel throughout the County of Northumberland.
Responsibilities- Provide Quantity Surveying, estimating, construction contract and payment services with a commitment to ensuring contracts are administered correctly so projects are delivered within budget.
- Collate tenders and unit rates, maintaining detailed working knowledge of construction contracts, methods of measurement and construction techniques.
- Prepare and submit reports, including uploading photos, and read and interpret construction plans and details.
- Participate in procurement processes and manage reporting and financial software required for funding management.
- Strong communicator able to build relationships at all levels.
- Highly organised, detail‑oriented and committed to accuracy.
- Confident engaging with clients, contractors and stakeholders.
- Collaborative team player within a multidisciplinary environment.
- Degree‑level qualification in Quantity Surveying or equivalent professional experience; a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction and the Built Environment/Building or equivalent combined with relevant experience is acceptable.
- Experience compiling tenders and unit rates and exposure to competitive pricing environments.
- Good knowledge of construction methods, building activities and how buildings are constructed.
- Intermediate MS Office skills (e.g., regular report preparation, photo uploads).
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across Northumberland and work on site in varying conditions.
- 26 days annual leave plus public/bank holidays, rising to 31 days after 5 years of service (pro‑rata for part‑time employees).

This is a full‑time permanent position. Applications on a secondment or part‑time basis may be considered for the right applicant.
