Statement of Duties
The Cashier performs a range of clerical support services such as the processing of tax collection payments in support of department operations. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.
Supervision RequiredUnder direct supervision of the Tax Collector, where clear, detailed and specific instructions govern the work or are explained with each assignment. The employee works as instructed and consults with the supervisor as needed on all matters not specifically covered in the guidelines or instructions. The supervisor maintains control by reviewing the work in progress or upon completion.
Supervisory ResponsibilityEmployee is not regularly required to supervise any employees.
ConfidentialityEmployee does not have regular access to confidential information.
AccountabilityThe nature of work means that errors can be easily detected, usually by the employee. Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may result in minor confusion, involving minimal time and expense for correction, such as bookkeeping, data entry or failure to follow established procedures.
JudgmentWell defined or detailed rules, instructions and procedures cover all aspects of work. Judgment involves choosing the appropriate practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines to apply in each case.
ComplexityWork consists of routine or repetitive tasks and/or operations with little variation in established procedures.
Work EnvironmentThe position works in a municipal office setting subject to frequent work interruptions. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant.
Nature and Purpose of Public ContactRelationships are constantly with co-workers and the public involving frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines in order to render service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems. Extraordinary courtesy, tact, and diplomacy may be required to resolve complaints or deal with uncooperative or uninformed persons.
Occupational RiskDuties generally do not present occupational risks to the employee.
Essential Functions- Responsible for the receipt and reconciliation of all cash and other payments received via mail, internet or public walk‑ins as well as the posting of daily collection information into the department’s software system.
- Assists with the processing of department bills and the sorting of returned mail.
- Assists with the record retention set‑up and organization.
- Responds to requests for information from the public in person at a counter.
- Makes bank deposits when required as a back‑up to department staff.
Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent; and one (1) year of office work experience that includes cash handling, banking transactions, or financial reconciliation.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills RequiredKnowledge: Working knowledge of office procedures, modern office equipment, and the utilization of personal computers and office software (word processing and spreadsheet applications) and the Internet in support of department operations. Knowledge of applicable local and state regulations/laws pertinent to a municipal Tax Collector’s office.
Abilities: Ability to interact in a positive and effective manner with employees and the public and to work independently; ability to execute oral and written instructions in a precise and timely manner; ability to operate a variety of office equipment at efficient speed including calculator, typewriter, word processor, computer; ability to plan and organize work; ability to handle large sums of cash in a prompt and accurate manner;
ability to work with numbers and manage multiple tasks in a detailed, accurate manner.
Skill: Good judgment, and ability to maintain effective staff and customer relations; able to follow instructions and communicate proficiently both orally and in writing. Proficient data processing skills including word processing and spreadsheet applications as well as basic business mathematical skills.
