Equipment Operator II CDL
Purpose of ClassificationThe purpose of this classification is to drive and operate vehicles and other equipment with specialized functions utilized in the installation, maintenance and repair of water, wastewater and/or stormwater utility infrastructure and related systems on an assigned crew in an assigned unit. Equipment utilized includes vehicles with complex mechanisms that require the highest degree of skill, dexterity, and finesse to perform work to exacting tolerances.
EssentialFunctions
- Operate and utilize various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments. Examples include backhoes, large excavators, front‑end loaders, combination vacuum/jet trucks, boring machines, forklifts, motor graders, ditch witches, trencher, skid steers, taping machines, tractors, dump trucks, and rubber‑tire backhoes.
- Maintain all equipment and tools used; ensure adequate supply of parts and supplies to support work activities.
- Drive vehicles over public roads, transport equipment to work sites, rights‑of‑way, and CCWA property, maneuvering in and around traffic, parked cars, utilities, and other obstacles, while obeying all traffic laws and safety guidelines.
- Perform excavation activities where exacting tolerances are required: control placement of equipment, determine optimal digging approach, install water, wastewater, and stormwater mains and fire hydrants, place pipes and fittings into excavated ditches, backfill and level ditches, and survey work areas before excavation.
- Load and move materials using dump trucks, controlling scoop height, angle, and position to deliver payloads of sand, stone, gravel, and other materials. Avoid exceeding equipment capacity.
- Perform related duties: determine equipment needed for projects, ensure all work complies with county and state rights‑of‑way requirements, install piping correctly, apply gaskets and grease where required, and assist in training lower‑level workers.
- Inspect and prepare equipment for safe operation prior to each day’s work: conduct light maintenance (oil change, refueling, lubricants), clean vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment, and secure the vehicle after use.
- Follow established safety procedures: use protective gear, monitor work environment, direct traffic, place markers, signs, and cones to protect crew and the public, and report any incidents or unusual situations.
- Communicate with supervisors, CCWA employees, the public, and other stakeholders to coordinate work activities, review status, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- The position may require on‑call assignments.

- High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of experience operating equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

- Must obtain and maintain Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A (Upon hire).
- Must obtain Erosion and Sediment Control certification within 6 months of hire.
- Demonstrate proficiency in performing essential functions and apply all CCWA or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
